This Is the Way the World Ends.
Four years after a tragic mission decimated his team, Cole "Tox" Russell has been disavowed by the United States. And that's fine--he just wants to be left alone. But when a dormant, centuries-old disease is unleashed, Tox is lured back into action.
Tox and his former Special Forces team regroup to work with FBI deception expert, Kasey Cortes, and fiery archaeologist, Tzivia Khalon, to search the globe for answers--and a cure. As the mission leads from one continent to another, it becomes clear they're not just fighting a plague but battling an ancient secret society whose true goals remain hidden.
With time running out and the threat for a global pandemic rising, Tox and his team realize their sole chance might be to reach back through centuries of silence to find the only answer that can save them all.
"This fast-moving, roller-coaster thriller, with its powerful clandestine society, ancient secret, nefarious conspiracies, search spanning the globe, and under-pressure romance is sure to please fans of romantic suspense and military ops romances."--Booklist
"Kendig keeps the tensions high and the pace lightning fast, with military action scenes worthy of Vince Flynn. Especially noteworthy is watching the character development of elite modern warriors forced to confront and accept ancient history, faith, and supernatural power. Kendig fans will love this opening novel in her new series."--Publishers Weekly

Ronie Kendig’s Conspiracy of Silence presents an interesting thesis: what would happen if an ancient curse were unleashed on the modern world? The first book in The Tox Files, Conspiracy of Silence brings back our hero from the prequel, Tox Russell. His actions have estranged him from his team, his family, and his country. He has been in exile and left alone.
But now his country needs him back. A strange plague has broken out in the Mideast and the President (Tox’s brother) wants him back in action to find and eliminate the threat. When a team is sent to retrieve Tox, he eludes them and then shows up in his brother’s office–easily eluding the security systems in place to protect the President.
Tox is able to reunite his team and they are off to the Middleast along with an FBI deception expert, Kasey Cortes, and an archeologist, Tzivia Khalon, the sister of one of the members of the team. They travel the globe searching for answers but are blocked near the location of the outbreak. Why? What has caused the plague? Why do these people want to keep the source a secret?
Tox Russell is a complex character but very believable. Kendig has the knack of creating heroes who are flawed but endearing. The romantic interests are believable but restrained. The secondary characters are fleshed out and each are unique personalities. In the Tox Files, Ronie has created a modern-day speculative series of intrigue and mystery.
Ronie Kendig is a prolific author with several awards to her credit. As an army brat, Kendig has drawn most of her series from her experiences with various branches of the military. You will enjoy any of her books you read, especially my favorite, her series about service dogs, A Breed Apart.
Bethany House gave me a copy of Conspiracy of Silence, but I was in no way obligated to write a favorable review.
The biggest struggle with this novel is that, although it is the first in a series, the reader comes into it almost expected to be familiar with past happenings in these characters’ lives. I learned later that Kendig released a prequel that it appears covers some of these events, which I think would have made following the story line of Conspiracy of Silence much easier.
Unfortunately, the difficulty in understanding the history behind the characters and their interactions made following the plot difficult throughout the entirety of the novel. There are also a lot of characters to keep straight, though the level of complexity brings a certain depth to the book, it also brings some confusion at times.
The plot itself is quite interesting, a deadly disease, Biblical archeology, special forces in MidEast conflict—it has all the makings of an intriguing adventure. The plot is a bit unbelievable, but that doesn’t stop the reader from thoroughly enjoying the ride. It’s action packed, fast-paced and invites you to travel the world.
Our hero, “Tox” is a bit too talented for believability, somewhat like a Jack Bauer or other hero character. He is interesting, though, and certainly far from perfect. The cast of characters backing him up are varied and interesting, from a stealthy Nigerian warrior who always has his back to a team of former military brothers, a spirited Israeli historian to a young FBI agent passionate about contributing her skills in deception detection.
For those in search of a big dose of adventure, Kendig’s Tox Files series is probably for you. In spite of it’s flaws, it’s a wild ride!
I received a complimentary copy of Conspiracy of Silence from Bethany House, but I was not otherwise compensated for this review. All writing, thoughts, and opinions are solely mine.
