Legal scholar Sunstein has assembled “the most controversial” of his academic articles. And the key word here is academic. These aren’t pieces written for general audiences; each of them was written for a specific readership (an essay about cost-benefit analysis was originally published in The Behavioral Foundations of Public Policy), and it’s doubtful many readers who pick up this book will be among the target audience for all of its 11 essays. Maybe treat the book like a buffet: pick the items that appeal to you. Here, for example, is a very interesting article about conspiracy theories, in which the author examines not just the truth or falsehood of such theories but also their purpose within society and the standards by which we accept or reject them. Here’s an excerpt from the author’s 2004 book The Second Bill of Rights, in which Sunstein examined FDR’s 1944 State of the Union speech. Here’s “Marriage,” a look at the meaning of the “right to marry” and its logical extensions (does a constitutional right to marry necessarily include same-sex marriage?). In the eyes of Mr. Sunstein, it would be reasonable to focus on terrorism because people from other nations believe false conspiracy theories about the United States. I'm not really qualified to say much about this specific odd claim by Sunstein but I can point out Cass R. Sunstein's "brilliant understanding" about the crippled epistemology of extremism because he assumes/claims that most Americans are lazy, can't present coherent conservation and we all need to trust the people running our government. This is because this dude says that you aren't there personally, specifically when it comes to politics and government. This crazy num-nut goes on to say that because of our failures in not being at hand, he recommends cognition infiltration to help relax your mind.

If one is able to agree with this political/social engineering BS crap, then his publication is a welcomed piece of work that very clearly enhances one of the members of the 9/11 Commission where she claims that what happened on September 11th, 2001, could have resulted [because] the investigation of intelligence activities was hampered by the church Committee's investigation in the public murder and cover up of what really happened to JFK...might have handicapped the discovery of the attackers plans (regarding the tragic event on September 11th, 2001), years later.

A Review from Someone Who Actually Read the Book!

Ignore the one-star reviewers who have not actually read this level-headed exploration of the consequences of false conspiracy theories in the heads of those who would be provoked to violence. Sunstein, like his former boss Barack Obama in _The Audacity of Hope,_ is reasonable - not at all the extremist he's accused of being but level-headed as a sober Founding Father. This exposition on not only the effects of conspiracy theories but a revisiting of his previous book on Franklin D. Roosevelt's Second Bill of Rights, among other topics, is terrific food for thought. There's no need for me to go over the other topics this book covers: it would be spoiler material. Just check out the table of contents. Rest assured, Sunstein stays on point and engages.

Two Hundred and Twenty pages of Typing

This is a book of poorly fashioned rhetoric written by a man who leave one with the impression that he cannot pass a mirror without having a look at himself. At his age he should not be talking about what school he went to. Everyone knows we learn more after university than we could ever learn in a institution of mass indoctrination. This books first premise is that conspiracies are scrapped together with bits of fact taken out of context and largely presented as fact when they never have any evidence to support those facts. This is false and so Mr. Sunstein spends the next 32 pages trying to support this false premise. I would not recommend this book to anyone unless they were studying logic and used this book as a case study in fallacies.

The actual book is cheaply made and the paper is not much better than news print..

A Very Important, Fascinating, Thought-Provoking Book

I'm grateful that I didn't bother to read the negative reviews before choosing to buy this excellent book. While the essays might seem disparate, this book could be a primer in critical thinking, offering insightful, important, timely, and often convergent thinking, solutions, ideas, and habits of mind. I'm making this book required reading for my graduate students in humane education whose work is to prepare their students to be solutionaries for a better world. This can't be done without careful, methodical critical and creative thinking which Cass Sunstein models on every page.

Conspiracy Theories are not about a type of person,
that is, a person who "believes" in some theories.
Conspiracy Theories are about a type of crime.
The type which perpetrators plan beforehand to commit.

Typical of "debunkers" and propagandists, here all manner of Theories are
lumped together, and the Conspiratorial Type of Person is assumed.
This Person is flawed. Wrong. Incorrect. Crippled. Effed up.
We would like to figure out how these false ideas are spread among the Effed Up People.

This analysis is pathetic and inane.

As for some particular theory being "demonstrably false", I would very much like to see Mr. Sunstein
engage in a discussion with the major proponents of said theory and please, do demonstrate its falseness.

Incidentally, that the United States Government conspired to kill Martin Luther King Jr is not a conspiracy theory,
but a legal finding.
