Baker begins his tale with a short picture of his childhood in working-class, post WWII England. On page 9, on his way home from his last day of school--glad to be done with school, sick of education, but unsure what to do with his life--he 'drowns' his math folder. I could totally relate and he had me from that point on.
This book was an interesting look at the life of a Merchant Marine in the 1960s. Baker has a comfortable way of writing that makes you feel like you're right there with him. He nails the awkwardness of becoming a man--those intense feelings and confusing emotions--against the backdrop of ship life and frequent stops in foreign and exotic ports. Told very much 'in the moment,' the prose is engaging and real. You experience his adventures--some humorous, some sad, some poignant, some outright crazy, through his eyes. His descriptions brought the book to life--the Suez Canal with its desert on both sides of the water was particularly well-done.
Constant Traveller R801168 is an adventure story and a coming of age tale told with skill and honesty. If you enjoy memoirs, I don't think you'll be disappointed in this book!
