First of all Contigo mugs are the absolute best. I make my coffee at 5:30 AM and it's still hot at 10 or 11 AM when I finish it. At home on the weekends my wife has me make her coffee in these mugs even though we are sitting around the house because she drinks it slowly and likes her coffee very hot and this mug keeps it burn-your-mouth-hot for at least an hour or two (it does lose heat through the plastic lid though very slowly).
The stainless steel body is flawless. I like that it's not lined with plastics that can leech into whatever you are drinking and that it's not aluminum which I have read is possibly reactive with your beverages. It's hard to go wrong with food grade stainless steel and the double walled construction on these mugs is an engineering feat.
The plastic lid is the only weak point on these mugs though the newer lids are improved over the originals which had a strong plastic odor which wouldn't go away no matter how many times you washed them. One of my original lids started leaking through the autoseal after a year which was really just a drip when the mug would happen to fall sideways in my backpack which wasn't often. I did order a couple of new lids from the manufacturers website which were the exact same grey lids as this new mug shipped with.Read more ›
After reading all of the reviews for these new-fangled, fancy mug lid mechanisms it was obvious that most everyone had difficulty cleaning them, even after just one use if coffee was allowed to sit in them for any amount of time. That said, we thought it would be worth a shot to try them out since we liked the old ones so much and understood that we would likely run into the same challenges everyone else had cleaning the lids. Contigo's lid cleaning instructions themselves actually seemed reasonable enough but after just three uses the lids had a definite foul odor around the mouthpiece area just as everyone else had complained about. Even washing them out immediately once the coffee was finished and soaking them in hot, soapy water didn't resolve the stench and it worsened the more we used them.
If you've ever left coffee with cream sitting in a coffee cup until it got cold, you've seen that nasty, coffee-ring residue that forms around the inside of the coffee cup and you likely also know that it takes at least a little bit of friction to scrub it off. It seems to me that that's exactly what's happening inside the opening mechanism on the inside of these lids and it starts the first time you add cream to your coffee and take a sip.Read more ›
It doesn't leak, even if you shake it hard. I don't think you could make it leak even if you tried.
Specs say it keeps liquids hot for 6 hours, but it is really more like 4 hours (which is still decent - the specs for the 16 oz. are 4 hours too ... strange that the larger one is supposed to somehow outperform the smaller one?). I have not tested it with cold liquids.
I rinse mine in water, sometimes hot water, sometimes cold, within a reasonable time after finishing my drink and have not noticed any odors in the cap.
The specs say it fits most standard car cup holders, but it doesn't fit in any of the three cars I drive (Subaru, Toyota, Mazda) so I am not sure how standard that is. I would suggest you confirm measurements if this is absolutely critical for you. Since it doesn't leak, I have just been laying it in the seat beside me when driving.
In summary, this mug performs well and is very easy to use with one hand. I highly recommend this mug (despite the contradictions between the specs and real performance) and would purchase it again.
UPDATE 11/8/2011: After many weeks of use for hot coffee on my morning commute, it is still performing great. Easy to clean with hot water. Shaking it sideways, upside-down and filled w/ hot water, seems to dislodge the most residue in the cap. After doing that a couple of times, I fill it with the hottest tap water I can get, cap it, and turn it upside down to soak for however long I have time for (usually overnight). Occasionally, I will use a very small amount of a citris type veggie wash in the water.Read more ›
