The most important part: does it insulate well and keep my coffee hot? Holy crap, yes. My lovely wife makes coffee around 8am. My coffee is still hot at noon. 4 hours, which is what Contigo advertises. They also advertise keeping liquids cold for 12 hours, which I believe but don't care about.
So how does it work? Double-walled construction with a vaccuum in the middle. That's right--aside from the lid, the coffee doesn't really have a surface that touches air. How wonderfully scientific.
The lid completely seals in the goodness. No drips! Hold it upside-down, flip it around, toss it in the back seat and not a single drop will be dripped. Now, press the big, springy button and coffee will come a-flowin. The lid is nice an ergonomic, perfect for sipping.
Cleaning the cup itself is easy. It's hand-wash only, but we use a basic OXO bottle brush and it cleans up quickly and easily. The lid is another story. It's not very easy to clean quickly due to all of its nooks and crannies. The lids are dish washer safe, so that's an easy option, though it takes time. A quick rinse is usually all I do between uses, and let's be honest: with all those little hidden places, there's probably some grossness.
For the most part, it's easy to clean. Any option needs cleaned, so just don't be lazy.
I couldn't be any happier with these travel mugs. I suppose the lid could be easier to clean, but maybe not with its current functionality. I'm no coffee mug engineer. This keeps your drinks HOT, fits in cup holders, doesn't spill and looks nice to boot.
After quickly testing my theory, I realized I was on to something. There you go, nearly 4 years of use and still going strong. Now with added cocktail goodness.
ProTip: *Warning - I am not advocating you follow the below tip and go against Contigo instructions. I did this with my own Contigos and nothing bad happened to the Contigos, cats and dogs did not start kissing, and pigs did not start flying. However, your experience may be vary and as such I take no responsibility.
Like others, I read the directions and warning not to put the lid in the dishwasher. Like others I discovered cleaning the lid is a major pain. It got to the point that I just didn't care if it eventually broke and placed them in the dishwasher. Well, nearly 4 years later and no issues!
I take care of my stuff, end of story. I wash it out as soon as I'm finished, let it air dry, and do my best to keep things clean. This mug makes it practically impossible to do this with.
Regarding the AUTOSEAL function and thermal capabilities (drinks stay hot!), this mug is spot on. Never have to worry about a drop of coffee coming out (unless you put too much in to begin with, which means when you screw the lid on it streams down the side - which is your fault!) or being cold when I take my first sip.
I've posted a temporary solution below for cleaning my Contigo mug. The solution my wife came up with was to push the open button on the mug, and put some toothpicks in the mouth of the mug to keep the mug from closing, and soak it in water. While it worked, I used hot hot hot water from our tea kettle, and now I have two little indents in the mug lid that don't cause it to seal.
But, if you try this you'll see that PLENTY of coffee flakes and other yuck come floating out and into the water. Perhaps if I didn't use such hot water the plastic wouldn't have become mailable and deformed.
Too bad even THIS solution didn't work, because now my coffee tastes like soapy water from the soaking - apparently clean, soapy water is equally hard to get out of the tiny AUTOSEAL spaces then old coffee.
I truly do like this mug. Everything else about it is fantastic! If an easier way to clean this thing can be developed I'll never buy another mug in my life.
[...] Contigo Cleaning Measures
I contacted Contigo regarding the stinky lid and linked to this review with pictures that I wrote. They asked no more questions and sent me a replacement lid for my mug.
Lid is actually manufactured differently, and on the inside the "cross bar" now flips up to allow better access to the parts of the lid that get stinky. Great job Contigo! I absolutely VALUE solid customer experiences. Customer won.
Another update, new lid is starting to smell. The autoseal function of this mug lid that is the primary selling point, also is the main downfall. I've actually switched to Thermos Stainless Steel King 16-Ounce Travel Tumbler, Midnight Blue, and haven't looked back. Mug is easy to clean, keeps drinks hot much longer than the Contigo, and best of all... doesn't stink.
I see that users who have noted this problem have been subject to comments by a Contigo customer service rep who blames the user for not following "Recommended Care and Use" procedures! Contigo should be looking at the poor engineering and unsanitary design of their product before blaming customers for this problem.
