My son took soup to school today. I heated it up pretty hot at 730 am and I also let the thermos sit with very hot water in it before I dumped out the water and poured in the soup. I think his lunch is at 12 noon. He said the soup was almost too hot to eat. Now, he is six, so what seems too hot to him is different from an adult so keep that in mind.
When I was reading the instructions just now before cleaning the thermos, it says, and I quote:
*Not for use with hot food or snacks."
Whuck? Elsewhere in the instructions, it refers to using this item with hot food, so I'm pretty confused about this. We're gonna be scofflaws and continue to use it for hot food. Anyway so far this item has been great and it fits pretty well in his soft-sided lunch box (He has this one: Wildkin Blue Camo Lunch Box )
UPDATE 9/12/15: OK so we have used it a handful more times. Apparently while it keeps soup/liquid super hot, it doesn't do as well when it's less full and less densely full. For instance, pasta or meatloaf put in hot in the morning is not hot at lunch time. I think it's maybe lukewarm at best. Just so you know.
Virtually all of the brands we've tried have failed the last test. They may keep things hot for 2 or 3 or even 4 hours, but my kids were constantly complaining that lunch was lukewarm or cold by the time they got to eat it. That changed completely when we found the Contigo food jar. I warm them for 10 minutes with boiling water before filling them, and as long as I make sure the lid is completely screwed down, food stays hot for 5 to 6 hours or more. No more complaints about lunches!
The handle and the textured lid are a nice bonus, as they make it easy for even younger kids to open the jar without help.
