It might be a fluke, but my last Continental Hometrainer was the first time that I've used the black version and it was nearly impossible to mount on the rim. I've probably gone through 6 sets of the yellow version and, although difficult to mount, they were not nearly as hard to mount as the last black version. I'll still give it 5 stars because I won't have to worry about mounting a new tire until sometime next year.
Note to do-it-yourselfers, it probably did not help at all that this tire was the first ever tire I tried to install on my own on a bike, but I had one incredibly difficult time installing this, ended up blowing an inner tube and then surrendering and taking it to my LBS who was able to make it look as easy as icing cake, so experience most definitely helps and your mileage will almost certainly vary when attempting to get this thing installed on the wheel, but once it's on, it is most definitely all business. I will not hesitate one bit to purchase another one of these down the road when my current one eventually wears down and this is hands-down the number one thing I will recommend to friends who inquire about using an indoor trainer--this tire is an indispensable component of anyone's indoor trainer setup!
This one is much easier to install.
As the reviews are very accurate, this tire was easy to install. I did not have to use a tire lever to get installed.
It's extremely quiet on the trainer, a lot quieter than my road wheels (I used to just use my road tire instead of a special tire for the trainer)
I put about 110-120psi in it for the trainer, works well!
My experience is that it works great on the trainer. I have no other trainer tire for comparison; but compared with a road tire (Specialized Turbo Pro) it is night and day better. It grips better (e.g. sprints), is quieter... I guess that's enough.
I did get a tire bead jack to install it, but after the valve failed on the antique tube I was using, I was able to get this tire re-seated with my fingers. So maybe just the first installation is hard?
If you are like I was, combing through endless, non-comparative reviews of trainer tires, STOP RIGHT NOW AND BUY THIS ONE. It works great. There may be one that is better by some criterion over a very long period of time, but there is nothing wrong with this tire. I can't imagine any improvement. It even costs less than a typical road tire.
More advice: I thought it was frivolous to assemble a wheel just for the trainer but now I regret not doing it sooner. They have very cheap, serviceable wheels - and great prices on better wheels - right here on Amazon. I recommend keeping a separate wheel for the trainer so there is no disincentive for switching back and forth between indoors/out - and maybe more importantly, no incentive for buying another bike.
