The tracks are standard size, so you can combine these tracks with all other 1:8 Scale tracks, the continental train track is more than 14 ft long and when assembled is about 5 foot in length and 4 ft in width. it should fit in any standard room. the tracks are very easy to assemble , as the manufacturer suggest tracks are easy snap, so no need to have any hardware, simply snap each track to another one. track is designed to be used in closed Oval, or Oval with circle, or circle by itself, however these combinations are endless. Please spend some times with your kids and help them set up their new train , the time you spent with them today, is equivalent of the time they will spend with you in future. Nice to look at when still, problems begin when you turn "ON" button

Nice to look at when still. Yes, the materials used are flimsy and cheap, reflecting the price sold.
Once you install the two batteries (and make sure they are in right order or otherwise the train will go backwards, but there is no clear instructions so you will have to try your luck to be right the first time, in this case it is 50/50 odds...there comes the problems:

Trains often derail after a short ride...short in this case, means one or less loop.
The tracks are not finished well so there are many gaps between pieces, adding to the instability. I tried adding some double sided tape but doesn't help much...also,, as seen on picture I tried taking one car off to add to stability...doesn't add much...still falls off track.
In the picture you see five cars total, but in reality there are only four and don't match the sales picture.
The train does have a red light and makes some variety of noises, which is good and fun for kids...
The train wheels still had stubs of unfinished plastics which one might try to clip with a nail clipper to make it smoother.

Basically, this train set is better suited as a mock up model to be left alone...without turning it ON.
If you want an actual working train set, I suggest looking elsewhere as this is a disappointment in one way or more.

Junk, but can work for the right situation

So, this thing is a piece of junk. HOWEVER, I knew that by the reviews before I bought it. My son is 2 1/2 and he wanted a choo choo for christmas. He is too young to keep up with little parts so track type things usually get jumbled up fairly quickly. So, we set this up for christmas this year (2014). It served its purpose for that and for $20, I could feel good about this as a one time use. So here is the good and bad:

GOOD
--Looks like a real train and not cartoon-y or baby-ish.
--moves around the track and won't derail unless you hit the train or bump the track
--very easy to set up but there is a feel to connecting the tracks. At first you will think there is a gap between track pieces but that is just cause the track is new. be careful with connecting the track pieces. track is cheap and you could break a connection off.
--makes train noises as it goes around the track
--only takes 2 AA batteries
--IT WAS INEXPENSIVE for my purposes

BAD
--the engine needed repairs right out of box. only plastic fixes, the engine ran fine. Make sure you have some crazy glue on hand.
--Some of the train car wheels are error in production but it didn't affect my set though.
--after my son picked up the train a couple times, the car connectors started breaking. Again, I got the trusty super glue out.
--the track is not a perfect oval so one connection is always trying to unsnap. There is a sweet spot so you can make it work, just a slight pain.
--Most of the bad is just how junky the item is. looks cheap, is cheap, stuff breaks often, etc. BUT.........you get what you pay for!

Consider this train only if you want a cheap looking train set that nobody touches or if for an eventually disposable reason like I stated above. It seems like every set is like a snowflake, no 2 are alike.....in that it is russian roulette as to which issues you will be dealing with. Also, the picture is definitely not the train cars that comes with it and there is an engine car and 3 other train cars.

If you want to get your child a nice present, then stay away from this train! !!!
You may ask why, because:
1. Train tracks dont lock in well together
2.Wagons don't connect well together and constantly disconnect.
3. Hard to position the train on the tracks, it keeps coming off.
4. Very poor quality and not user friendly.

I got it as a xmass present for my 3 yr old. He loved it and so did I. for the price that you getting you can't beat it.
the railroad is big enough to go around the tree or just to play in the living room.
Making sure the train stays on the tracks takes a little finesse though but if you ever had one as a kid you'd get it in no time.
I'm defiantly getting this set again next year as my 3 yr old already broke it/lost some of the peaces. but deff good buy for the money.

This train was a great price and snaps together and runs very nicely. The sounds are annoying and non stop, after being left on for a solid day the batteries died. But after convincing my toddler to turn it off before she left the room, the train lasted a few weeks before needing new batteries. The track stays together on carpet. The train never seems to "derail" accidentally. The motor car can be put on a hard surface and will move like an powered toy without it's track. Overall I was very happy with this set, simple and served it's purpose without all the fancy lights and features.

I bought this for a Christmas display at my office. It was small enough to fit on a business table and it worked well. It was the envy of the office once it was up and running. However, it was VERY LOUD. I work in a company where people are constantly on the phones so this was a problem. There was no way to disable the sound and my coworker had to stab the speaker with push pins until it died.

If it was possible to turn the sound off I'd have given five stars. Everything else was absolutely perfect for what I needed.

The wheelbase on one of the sets of wheels was too wide for the track, so it couldn't stay on. I had to take it apart, clip the axle, and superglue it back on, then it kind of worked. You also can't turn off the sound, which is pretty annoying. It's possible to take out every screw in the thing and get to the speaker to clip the wire, which is what I ended up doing, but it would be nice if it just had an off switch for the sound...
I guess you get what you pay for, but I at least expected it to run on the track when it was brand new.
