Continental Grand Prix 4000 S II
The Grand Prix 4000 S II is the ideal combination of comfort, puncture protection, and low rolling resistance. It's the perfect all-rounder for all conceivable conditions with excellent puncture protection thanks to Vectran puncture protection and BlackChilli's high mileage rolling efficiency. Handmade in Germany.
Superior grip and less rolling resistance
- This unique tread rubber mixture which is only produced in Continental's German factory has revolutionized bicycle tires.
- BlackChili Compound improves rolling resistance by 26 % and provides 30 % more grip than activated silica compounds.
- Premium tires with BlackChili Compound also impress with higher mileage and unlike many multi-compounds, provide a consistent ride from the first to the last mile.
The Benchmark in puncture resistance
Vectran is a synthetically manufactured high-tech fiber from a natural model. Like spider silk, Vectran is a liquid-crystalline polymer (LCP). Vectran is spun from the melted liquid polymer Vectra and processed further to a multi-strand thread. Spider silk like Vectran has an enormous tear resistance at a very low weight: Exactly the right properties to process into a premium Continental bicycle tire as a puncture protection insert. A Vectran Breaker is lighter, more flexible and protects more effectively against cuts than the comparable nylon breaker. Vectran Breaker does not adversely affect the rolling resistance.
Integrated wear indicators
To the untrained eye, it may appear that your brand new Continental Grand Prix 4000 S II's have small holes in the tread. Those are not holes my friend, those are Continental's tread wear indicators. When the holes are gone, the tread is gone. This helps you, the rider, to ride with confidence and maximize tread wear. With the integrated wear indicators, you will know exactly when it's time to grab a new set of GP 4000 S II's for your trusty steed.
More than 100 years experience in the development and production of bicycle tires has made Continental a unique company within the industry.
Inside Continental's technology and development center in Korbach, they are constantly developing new revolutionary technologies such as the unbeatable Black Chili compound and the ultimate Vectran breaker anti-puncture technology, both used at the top end of race sport.
These technologies demand sophisticated processes to ensure our legendary end-product quality, and these innovations as well as the ProTection and RaceSport technology for MTB tires, can only be manufactured in our factory in Germany – 'Handmade in Germany'.
Have fun experiencing the Continental products! Our team works hard for you!
The grand prix 4000 s ii is the reference tire on the market and has already gone through many stages of evolution. We are giving the flagship a new face. The discreet bead strip makes it possible to perfectly color coordinate to the bike without forgoing Black Chili tread performance. We have also expanded the size range: an additional 28 mm version provides better grip under poor conditions, improved puncture protection and greater comfort. The proven cornerstones of the 4000 s ii remain unchanged: Vectran breaker for unsurpassed puncture protection, Black Chili compound for low rolling resistance and sensational grip - handmade of course in Germany.

**I've been a road cyclist for 6 years, and have done various bike rides throughout the country and abroad.
When riding solo, it's still there, but in the ability to hold 1 or 2 MPH higher speed for miles on end. (so was 19 or 20, now holding 20 to 22 MPH)
We really don't have severe curves where I can test out the traction, but in as far as friction (or the wattage sponge that tires can be), investing the little bit more $$$ was worth it.
They are fast. My morning circuit is actually 1 - mph faster since changing.
They are comfortable. While I feel more detail in the road surface, the over all ride seems softer.
They (so far) very grippy. I have no problems on wet roads or wet bascule bridge grates.
They are (comparatively) light in weight.
They have folding beads. A big plus once you see them work. I'm reserved as to their longevity yet ...
They mount easily. While not sloppy, I pushed them on to the rims with no tools.
The finish quality is excellent.
The reflex sidewalls area huge plus: FL state law (and my safety) mandates side-reflectors on wheels
The tires I replaced are Specialized Espoir Sport 700x30. They came with the bike. They are far from worn out but have enough cuts, bumps, bruises and age to need replacing. City riding is tough on tires. In Fort Lauderdale, it's brutal. Nuts and bolts, sandspurs, deadly road grooves and storm drains.
Tires get old. Dry rot isn't a problem till a sidewall blows out at 60 kph. If your tires are more than a couple of years old, replace them.
