ContourROAM Frequently Asked Questions:
1: What is new with this camera?ContourROAM is designed for enthusiasts in active settings, is easy to use and has several new features:
+ Built in battery
+ Instant On Record Switch
+ Rotating lens with Laser Line
+ Built in Tripod screw mount.
2: How waterproof is ContourROAM?Designed and tested to the IPX7 standard rating, ContourROAM can withstand continuous immersion in water 1m deep for up to 30 minutes. IPX7 is a technical definition of waterproofness, in everyday terms usage ContourROAM’s low-profile design withstands everyday bad weather and swimming. A waterproof case is available for more extreme water sports such as surfing and scuba diving.
3: Is there a waterproof case for ContourROAM, and how waterproof is it?Yes, a waterproof case has been specifically designed for ContourROAM. This case is waterproof to the following ratings:
This means the case can withstand high pressure water jets. In everyday usage terms this means the case is resistant to water pushing on the housing, such as would be experienced in kayaking, surfing and other active water sports.
This means the case can withstand the pressure of being underwater to a depth of 60m. In everyday usage terms this means the case can be used for recreational SCUBA diving.
4: How does the Instant On Record Switch work?ContourROAM has no dedicated Power button. Instead, the Instant On Record Switch powers the camera on and immediately starts recording. This helps to conserve battery power as the camera does not have to be powered on in a ‘standby mode’ to be ready to record. The result is better battery life, and an easy-to-use camera. Best of all, there's no guess work in whether the camera is on or not.
5: What is the 270 degree rotation? The lens-ring will rotate from -90 degrees to +180 degrees. This means ContourROAM can be mounted on its side or upside down, greatly increasing the places the camera can be mounted.
6: What is the Laser Line? The Laser Line is a single laser beam that is projected as a horizontal line from the camera’s rotating lens. It lets you make sure the rotating lens is aligned with the horizon to give you the best shot.
7: How well does the built-in battery perform?By building the battery in, our engineers could maximize battery size, reliability, and waterproofness. Because the camera is not powered on until the Instant On Record Switch is slid forward, ContourROAM maximizes battery power. Recording at 720p our tests show the camera can record 3.5 hours of video. Length of charge will depend on how you use the camera. Connected to a computer via USB, the battery will reach approximately 80% charge in one hour, and a full charge in 3 to 4 hours.
8: How does the Status Button work? When you press and release the Status Button, the camera will power on briefly and display its Battery level and available Memory. The Laser Line will also light up. After 15 seconds, the camera will power off again to conserve power.
9: What sort of thread does the tripod mount have? The tripod thread mount is a 1/4-20 thread. This is the standard one used on most consumer cameras.

1. Open the back cover. (This was kinda tricky but the way you open it is by holding the side of the cover and sliding it 'UP')
2. Insert a microSD card and doing a format. (Without this step, your PC won't recognize the device, so I suggest you do this right away)
3. Connect my Roam to the PC and upgrading the firmware from 1.6 (I think) to 2.16 (latest f/w for Roam 2 found at their site)
=> You can find how to upgrade by reading other reviewer's comments here at Amazon.
=> The reason for the upgrade is to get 60fps instead of 30fps in HD. Much smoother video when taking action video shots.
4. Recharge the battery for 4~5 hours.
I took the Roam on a pool trip yesterday and tried it for the first time. I had also bought the headband for the Contour Roam so I used
this to mount it on my head. Here are the results and I'm quite impressed. I'll be taking this thing on a bike trip next week and
see how that goes.
At under $100 for an action cam, I'm a VERY satisfied customer.
(*) BTW, the f/w 2.16 that's only for Roam 2 works perfectly on Roam 1. :-)
- Sleek, compact & low profile shape
- Rugged & dust proof
- Easy slide-on recording
- Unit alone is waterproof to 1-meter
- Takes 32GB microSDHC media cards
- Can rotate the camera
- Has a screw-hole mount for tripod & etc.
- 170 degrees wide screen lens
- Can't toggle recording settings on the fly; need to hook it up to a computer with the StoryTeller software installed.
- Internal battery only (not-user replaceable/swappable)
- Under default medium video quality setting, a fully charged battery only lasts about 3hrs of continuous recording (there was 10GB of free space left).
- Only has a battery indicator & NO battery gauge; not even in the StoryTeller software
- Only had media card indicator
- Bad in low light
- No viewfinder
- No image/video stabilization
- Could easily lose the lens cover.
- Seems that the unit loses its clock sync to the computer.
- Doesn't come with a power adapter nor a case. End up buying an OtterBox 2000 case to fit all the essential accessories I bought for it.
- Goggle mount hard to find
I think it's important to point out a few things though. The software, which you need to go to their website to download, requires Quicktime to be installed (which I do not like at all, I generally do not allow Quicktime on my machines). The software has NO instructions, not even a quick-start. They have been saying on their forum that they are "working on" a manual for over a year now, and still no manual.
Also it appears that their software will only work properly (with all features) when registered and logged in to their web service. I'm not fond of the new paradigm of locking you in to a company's services if you want to use a device that you paid for. Oh, and the EULA says that you're not allowed to use the software unless you're 18 (of legal age to sign a contract). I realize that nobody reads the things, but I thought that was amusing.
Editing is very non-intuitive to use (you have to click a button labeled "AWESOME" to select a section of video - seriously, is this designed for 12 year olds?) and as far as I can tell, there's no way to export video either to the hard drive or online except through their web service.
Even using the software for configuring the camera doesn't really seem to work that well - the only options are frame rate and date/time. Luckily there is a fairly easy way to configure the camera by just editing a text file on the memory card after plugging it in to USB, but that's really somewhat clunky. It DOES give you access to all the features though (different resolutions, still picture mode, volumes, the ability to put some personal info in there), beeps on and off. Since the camera is advertised as 1080P but it comes set to a lower resolution, and the software apparently can't set the resolution, this can be a problem unless you figure out how to use the txt file to set the parameters.
The mounts that this thing comes with are scary, they're basically just double-sided tape on a hunk of plastic and a slide mount, and since they're flat they probably wouldn't stick very well to a helmet (one of them is somewhat flexible but I wouldn't trust it). I actually just designed and made my own mount that I trust more (it secures to my helmet with a zip tie).
Bottom line, it's a nice camera but the software is close to useless and the mounts are flimsy, plan to have/buy a copy of some 3rd party video editing software, and if you want to helmet mount, plan to spend more on mounts or make your own if you're handy.

What I hate is weight and expensive accessories.
