A classic NWOBHM release with some terrific rocking tracks. Production is a bit on the weak side but a lot of indie metal release from back then were. Excellent songs and a top notch vocalist make this one of the better releases from that time. This is the first time I've heard this on CD and it is certainly an improvement over the LP version. Highly recommended to NWOBHM fans and classic rock fans alike. ROCK ON!

Originally released in 1985, Contract With Hell was the second album from New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) band Hammer...sort of. It's actually the first Hammer album, but the band issued an album a couple years earlier under the name Holland. They had to change their name after pressure from another band with the Holland name (the Little Monsters Holland is my guess). Well, Hammer is a better name for a metal band anyway, especially a NWOBHM band. Anyway...

As to the album, Contract With Hell is an interesting slab of British metal. It's very much in the NOWBHM mold, with hard charging guitar riffs, headbanging rhythms, spooky lyrics and that unique streetwise, DIY energy. There's also a bit of hard rock and maybe even prog in some of these songs. It's a good mix, and brings to mind bands like Satan, Quartz and Holocaust at times.

I wouldn't call this an essential NWOBHM album, but Contract With Hell is definitely an album that serious NWOBHM collectors ought to check out. Sadly, this was the band's last release.

Edition Notes: Old Metal Records reissued Contract With Hell in 2011. It's a typical bare-bones OMR reissue, but it is good to have this album on CD. It includes a 1982 demo of "Hard Hittin' Woman" as a bonus track and seems to be remastered (or at least cleaned up a bit).
