No disclaimer here as I paid full price for this book and it's predecessor in the seties.
PS: Since I hate it when authors do this without warning, don't worry there is no cliff hanger here. Having said that my only real complaint is that this series is so much fun that I'm frustrated I have to wait for the next one (even though the related novellas are fun - Issa being the best so far).
Again we are treated to a marvelous and fun exploration of human nature and what it means to be human in a universe where thousands and thousands of years ago technology once made it possible for a select few to become veritable gods, and where now a few human beings must struggle to remember what it was like to be truly human... and free.
A strong character driven novel told clearly from multiple points of view that seamlessly integrates into a whole. A rich and multi-layered story about beleif, conflict, conquest, defeat, ignorance, knowledge, madness, desperation, loss, hope, love, honor, sacrifice, and maybe even redemption. A story set in a distant imagined future but firmly rooted in our collective human history - the history of war, of faith, of nations, and ideals and ideas.
Read it. You won't be disappointed.
(Final note: You don't need to know what the word 'contravallation' means to enjoy and understand what goes on in this book. But if by chance you've not studied tactics, look it up. You'll have a deeper appreciation of certain plot lines if you do.)
I read the first two books with "Kindle Unlimited", and they were so good that I bought them separately because I read so much he can't be getting much for my unlimited reading, and I want to support him publishing the rest of the series.
Seriously, I'm cheap, I don't do that!
If you want to read complicated/heart wrenching/fantastic space opera/military sci-fi/future history you must not pass these books up.
I've read virtually every major sci-fi series in existence, and I haven't read better.
I went back and reread a book I got for free when it came out last year in the same universe, "Essa", and it was good then, but is even better when put in context by the main books of the series.
