I *really* wanted to play this game as soon as I saw the trailers, and while I could have gotten it on PC I chose to get the PS4 version so I could enjoy the full "couch" experience.
But while the game is visually awesome and the story so far has been intriguing, the game play is effectively dead in the water thanks to horrific framerate slowdowns during combat. At first there aren't any, because you're only fighting a few enemies. But by the first boss fight, there's so much moving around in the environment you can get 10 frames per second performance.
TEN. FPS. On a PS4?!
Additionally, I noticed a lot of freezes and stutters when one of the cinematics played early on. I'm not certain how much of the stuttering was supposed to be for effect in the game but it really felt more like the game couldn't even play video off the hard drive during a downtime break, something that's utterly absurd.
I'm on patch 1.02 which I made sure to install before playing, and of course the game is fully copied on my hard drive and the PS4 is using the latest firmware. Unless Remedy comes up with a patch really soon or gives us some options to disable all the fancy blurring effects, it's going to be impossible for me to even finish the first boss fight.
Two stars because I really want to play the game, but it only deserves one as of now.

EDIT 2: bumping it back up to 3. Must say, despite the horrible performance and myriad of bugs (can’t upgrade pierce), it’s a truly original game and the battle system is quite fun. Having put so many hours into it already, apparently i can stomach the poor framerates. Looking forward to the performance patch... if I don’t complete the game first.
EDIT: It’s unplayable in its current state. Devs need to put some serious effort into fixing performance issues. Might demand a refund.
This game has some striking images and a dark mysterious storyline, which drew me into the game, but it’s very rough around the edges. When you first start playing you’ll see the character’s actions look super unnatural. The way she jumps looks very awkward, like mario. Her empty right hand looks like it’s gripping something invisible. I think it’s because the character was designed around the equipment and skills you pick up later in the game. Not a dealbreaker, but not what you expect when you want to be see be immersed in this world they created.
The biggest issue i have with this game though is the graphics. You get serious frame lag as you play, on as simple things as turning the camera and it gets worse depending on the surrounding. It gets literally unplayable on the base ps4 sometimes. This is pretty disappointing, since games made for ps4 should have only one system requirement - a ps4. I hope a soon to come patch fixes these issues.

To begin with, the plot is convoluted and is way too much complex without being explained at the player. Leave it a mystery if you have to keep spouting insane amounts of dialogue in the first hour. Too much to follow. The framerate needs major work. The game stutters and freezes during combat and even glitches out when pausing the game. Wait until its 20 bucks and has been patched a bunch, if you must play this game.

I absolutely adore this game; the atmosphere, strange story, and abilities you have feel unlike most everything else out there. But it's hard to recommend this game in its current state on baseline consoles or consoles at all until framerate issues are dealt with.
Update: There have been some patches that alleviate some issues with the framerate on consoles and, correct me if I'm wrong, but turning the internet on your PS4 off seems to help too. At a reduced price, it's definitely worth a buy.

I’m probably about 4-5ish hours in and so far I am loving it.
The combat is fast and frenetic and downright fun to play. It’s a blast to increase your skill at alternating between psychic powers and weapon forms during the flow of battle.
The story so far is absolutely bizarre and exactly as weird as I was hoping it would be. It’s trippy, funny, creepy, tense, and all around intriguing. I find that I can’t wait to continue to unravel not only the main storyline, but to explore and discover hidden areas.
The pacing seems just right to me as well. Between the sometimes quiet walking to terrifying ambient sounds in the background, discovering new locations and entering areas where combat either takes you by surprise or is hinted at a bit beforehand, it all flows together quite nicely.
I feel like I can’t say enough good things about this game. It’s a straight up single player experience with no strings attached. It’s gorgeous graphically, even on my base PS4, and it runs pretty smoothly.
If I had to give a couple cons, it’d be two things:
1. Sometimes there are some immersion breaking or janky (for lack of a better word) animations that can occur such as your characters tight hand lurching out if she isn’t holding a gun when you press a trigger button or jittering about if you attempt to walk up a steep staircase for example.
2. The frame rate was pretty rock solid up until I hit about 4 or so hours in, when you begin to face some larger combat arenas (where there is a lot of stuff happening and a lot of enemies running around) — it really begins to chug during these moments to a point where it’s not only noticeable but a bit disruptive to the gameplay. *I’ve found that when this happens, if I let up on the controls for a moment, it smooths out a bit and gets better, but it’s still an issue worth noting.
Despite those mild annoyances, I honestly have no complaints. And they aren’t enough, at least for me, to keep me from enjoying this fantastic game.
Couldn’t be happier I picked this up!

Espectacular y divertido
Reviewed in Mexico on November 16, 2019Platform For Display: PlayStation 4Verified Purchase

Too bad the new DLC is not included
Reviewed in Canada on April 1, 2020Platform For Display: PlayStation 4Verified Purchase
Edit. :
Do yourselves a favour, get the game. Only preferably get the Definitive version which includes both current DLCs. Mini spoiler, one of the DLCs hints at a third DLC.
The game, game-play and music are amazing.
Your character starts a mere everyday woman, searching for her brother. Then you get a multi function weapon that changes form at will. As the game progresses, so do various abilities you acquire. Some areas, you cannot access right away as they require a specific "power".
The level of detail and care put into the game and its lore is amazing. Sure, you could just speed through the whole game without reading any of the documents found but you would do yourselves a disservice. Some of it is pure gold.
The game shares and references the Alan Wake universe. Unfortunately, the Alan Wake game was an XBox exclusive (also avail. on PC). Otherwise, I would have gotten that game too, to explore the universe further.
===
Note: The rant is left unchanged, as I still hate game passes and DLC that comes out so close to the release date that it feels as cut-out content that a company charges you for. As good a content as it might be, this is a practice I abhor.
===
This is my rant about the industry. Not only this game in particular. Take a look at The Witcher 3 and how you got free DLC years after release that were longer and better quality than most so-called full games. Not the 1st to mention this, certainly not the last.
I freaking hate this "Season Pass" BS and how a game barely released has the balls to ask more money for what feels like content that was cut out from the original release. Honest work deserves honest pay. This is why I bought a brand new copy of this game. If they need more time to polish one last mission, then so be it, but I won't be paying for the DLC and I'll simply wait until we get the FULL game on Playstation Plus.
This game looks amazing, but will have to sit in my backlog a bit. Some games are getting hard to get in physical format even though they were barely released. Was still sealed, brand new, and fast shipping.

Excelente juego, mal FPS
Reviewed in Mexico on December 17, 2019Platform For Display: PlayStation 4Verified Purchase
