Syma is a well known manufacture of consumer copters and this one was well made with a quality controller and surprisingly good battery life. It recharges quickly and is almost effortless to fly due to it's headless mode and ability to remain close to a selected height and position with little or no input. It seems to be an excellent platform for the built in camera.
The props are well protected and suffered no damage after encounters with shrubs and a garden wall during the shakeout flights. A set of replacement props are included.
Many of the features including headless mode, are usually found in more "professional" models.
The Manual is a bit cryptic and requires careful reading to get the most out of this copter, but worth the effort.
The Camera and Android app will be tested in part two of this review.
The cellphone/FPV (First Person View) software couldn't be easier. Download it, bring up Wifi on the phone and log into the powered up drone. Bingo, the camera is working and all your controls are now on the phone. The phone clips onto phone for easy access. It works like a champ the the video feed is very high quality. I have spent thousands of dollars on sophisticated hexacoptors, gimbals and cameras but this copter is a blast, lots of fun and very capable. My only comment is that I would prefer to be able to use the controller in addition to the cell phone for controlling the copter and that a hood for using the phone in bright sun is necessary. That is not unique to this bird.
Update: I have discovered that by connecting the controller to the drone, THEN connecting the app to the drone, you can use the hand controller while using the phone as a FPV only storing both video and still. GREAT! The quality is very good indeed! Far beyond expectations for a drone of this size and price.
Several weeks ago I tried the Syma X20 and was surprised at how much easier and more fun it was to fly than the small drones I had in the past. My review of the X20 is at: https://www.amazon.com/review/R169SUK88IGPT2/ref=cm_cr_srp_d_rdp_perm?ie=UTF8
I decided to also try the slightly more expensive X21W because of the FPV (first person view) video capabilities. You can actually see, and record, video from the drone’s built in camera in flight on your smart phone. In my case I was using my iPhone 6S and it worked great with the free Syma Go app. I wouldn’t say you can control the drone only from the FPV video, without having the actual drone in sight (at least novice me couldn’t), but it still adds a lot to the experience and it’s great to be able to record the video or snapshots so easily on your phone.
The drone comes complete with two batteries and a bag of supplies which includes extra blades and the battery charging cable. It even has a tiny screwdriver to use on the little screw that locks the battery compartment on the remote control. The drone’s batteries take less than an hour to fully charge and the remote control runs on four AA batteries.
The manual is pretty easy to understand and there are also some YouTube videos that explain the controls and how the drone works. I was able to control it pretty well and get it all trimmed on the first charge of the battery, easily flying it around inside of our house even though I am far from a drone pilot expert. My prior drone experience was flying a small drone in the house and yard a few years ago which was very difficult to control, so not much fun, and a few days recently spent controlling this drone’s slightly littler brother the X20 as I mentioned above.
In comparison with the X20: This drone is just as easy to fly, and possibly slightly easier due to a nicer remote control unit. It is slightly larger than the X20 as you can see in the photo I’ve attached. Of course the most important feature is that the X21W includes a camera that connects to your smart phone via Wi-Fi through the Syma Go. You can even control the drone with just the app instead of using the remote control although I haven’t tried that.
Today was the second day I’ve flown the X21W and had fun running through a charge on each of the two batteries. I even tried it outside even though it was a little windy today. It held up OK to the wind although drifting did make it more difficult, especially since I’m such a novice drone pilot.
I made a short video that I attached to this review. It combines a little footage from the drone that shows flights both inside and outside. The outside views are very interesting once it gets a little high. I’m looking forward to a nice clear day when there is no wind to try it out a little more.
I highly recommend this drone.
Quick highlights in case you can't see my video...
- Five to seven minute flight time
- 35 minute battery recharge time
- Two batteries
- Does little flippies
Two thumbs up

..basta volare basso .
