"Gordon Leidner has brought together a marvelous collection of little-known accounts by people who met Lincoln. Their stories are often heartrending. Some will bring tears to the reader's eyes. The accounts demonstrate Lincoln's remarkable sensitivity and patience in listening to and wanting to help people in all walks of life, especially women, who were caught up in the tragic events of the Civil War. Readers of the book will appreciate anew Abraham Lincoln's extraordinary humanity and character." - William C. Harris, professor emeritus of history from North Carolina State University and author of
"This impressive collection presents vivid, detailed accounts of Abraham Lincoln from all phases of his life. Here we encounter more evidence of his generosity, his humanity, and his wisdom. Conversations with Lincoln only deepens our fascination with this most fascinating President.

Leidner’s earlier books such as Abraham Lincoln: Quotes, Quips, and Speeches masterfully compiled the 16th President’s own words to give us a glimpse into Lincoln's leadership, values, faith and character. Later books such as Lincoln's Gift: How Humor Shaped Lincoln's Life and Legacy presented some more human and complex aspects of his character.
Leidner’s most recent work, "Conversations with Lincoln: Little Known Stories from Those Who Met America’s 16th President" is his best. In contrast to the Lincoln we know from his public speeches and history books, "Conversations" takes us behind the scenes to reveal Lincoln’s noble and selfless character as recounted by those who met and interacted with him personally.
Lincoln was by far our nation’s most accessible President. It is astounding that during the height of the Civil War the White House was open to so many visitors, as people literally lined up for an audience with the President. In "Conversations", we get a glimpse of the President as recounted by the many people-- small and great; soldiers and congressmen; men, women and children of all socioeconomic backgrounds-- who sought and received Lincoln’s help or intervention with their particular situations.
Each conversation recorded in Leidner’s masterful work offers a captivating glimpse into Lincoln’s kindness, compassion and generosity. This is a very heart warming, inspiring and worthwhile read.
Sub-titled LITTLE-KNOWN STORIES FROM THOSE WHO MET AMERICA'S 16TH PRESIDENT, Leidner presents reminiscences by a variety of Americans who had face-to-face conversations with Lincoln. Many of the stories deal with people who needed Lincoln's help with pardons or matters of a personal nature. Taken together, the stories show us a principled, caring and altogether human who found the time to deal with 'small problems' while guiding the nation through the Civil War.
Reading CONVERSATIONS WITH LINCOLN, it's impossible not to be moved by Lincoln's humanity. Though only 180 pages long, Leidner's book makes a lasting impression. Highly recommended.
