I found this to be an insightful easy to follow tool. Of course you still have to do the work of mastering the skills and techniques taught in the book, but I like the way Susan explained them in an understandable way, even for a novice novel writer such as myself. I think this book would lend itself to either a straight through read or going section by section as you complete each step as the coach assigns them to the protege in the book. I also found it a great troubleshooting book. Sometimes you know something isn't working in your story but can't quite put your finger on it. It's very possible that as you complete the tasks/techniques given, you may realize the "issue" that was giving you the problem. Then you can go and read other resources to help strengthen that skill or area of your novel writing. That's what I'm doing. I found a wealth of information at Susan's website mybooktherapy.com to help me flesh out the areas I want to know more about. "Thanks, Coach!"
Perfectly helpful. The solid quality teaching wrapped in a friendly package. Makes me think of the Mary Poppins song, "A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down." No, serious. This book has a wealth of helps. Worth reading more than once.
I absolutely loved this book, I was in the mist of writer's block with my own short novel when I came across this piece on Kindle. The questions that were included were great as well as the reviewing of each chapter. I did a lot of my own thinking and planning from this book and followed a lot of the conversation between both characters. This definitely makes me want to have my own writing coach, I do wish it had been longer since I did like it very much. There could have been a lot more topics that could have been covered.
I liked this book because of the relaxed way it gave important messages. As it was my first time reading a book like this on creative writing I learnt a lot from it. It is a very good read for aspiring writers who want to learn the tricks of the trade. I am so glad I read this book because it saved me from making a lot of mistakes. I did not realize how much technical knowledge one needs to write well. I also enjoyed the journey with the writer. Susan May is a very talented writer and teacher.
Great book for the Pantsers and Plotters, for the novice and the experienced. Whether you're planning your next novel or editing your current WIP, there is something in here for everyone. This is a book I will no doubt read again and again.
A quick, snappy, fun to read, easy reference for novel writing! In one sitting I was able to find the major problem spots that were hijacking my novel. Of course, I've got work to do, but after Conversations With a Writing Coach, I know what to do.
