This is the first book I have read by Dr. Al Mohler, so I didn't really know what to expect. I knew that he was the President of Southern Seminary, so I thought this book was going to be more geared toward pastors and those in ministry; however, this book is written and made accessible to everyone, whether you're a leader or aspire to be a leader.
What makes this book worth your time is that the leadership principles presented here can be applied whether you're the leader of a church or the CEO of a multi-national corporation. There's more though. I think there's value in these principles for husbands (who lead their wives), parents, (who lead their children), and even children (who will benefit from thinking early about the impact they will make on others over the course of their lives).
I love Dr. Mohler's conviction and his desire to challenge each of us to lead by conviction and to leave a legacy that will stand long after we've departed from this world. I was especially challenged by the chapters on how the leader invests his time and how the leader thinks about his legacy. I gladly recommend this book to anyone who wants to think seriously and practically about the topic of leadership.

From the Inside Flap
Dr. R. Albert Mohler is President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, the Southern Baptist Convention's flagship school, as well as a radio personality, blogger, and sought-after commentator. Hailed by Time magazine as "the reigning intellectual of the evangelical movement in the U.S," Dr. Mohler has been quoted in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and USA Today. He has also appeared on such national news programs as Larry King Live, NBC's Today Show, Dateline NBC, Good Morning America, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, and The O'Reilly Factor.
Dr. Mohler lives in Louisville, Kentucky, with his wife, Mary. Visit his website at www.albertmohler.com. Let me warn you right up front--my goal in this book is to change the way you think about leadership. I do not aim merely to add one more voice to the conversation; I want to fundamentally change the way leadership is understood and practiced.
For the better part of the last three decades, leadership has been a major cultural preoccupation and a professional obsession. And yet something is missing...
You are going to discover that Christian leadership cannot be separated from passionately held beliefs. Only if you are deeply committed to truth will you be ready for leadership. You can be part of a generation that is simultaneously leading with conviction and driven by the conviction to lead. The generation that accomplishes this will set the world on fire.
I want to see that happen, and I think you do too.

From the Back Cover
Change the Way You Think About Leadership
At the age of thirty-three, Dr. Albert Mohler became the youngest president in the 153-year history of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was the driving force behind the school's transformation into a thriving institution with an international reputation characterized by a passionate conviction for truth. In the process he became one of the most important and prominent Christian voices in contemporary culture.
What will it take to transform your leadership?
Effective leaders need more than administrative skills and vision. They need to be able to change the hearts and minds of those they lead. Leadership like this requires passionate beliefs that can stand up to pressure from without and within.
Now for the first time, Dr. Mohler reveals 25 principles to crystallize your convictions, revolutionizing your thinking, your decision-making, your communication, and ultimately those you lead.
"Dr. Al Mohler has written a book that shakes us up and challenges our thinking. The Conviction to Lead is poised to become one of the all-time classic works on Christian leadership."
Jim Daly, President--Focus on the Family
"Having rarely thought about leadership, I was hooked from the first chapter--to my complete surprise. This is a powerful book and gracefully written."
Fred Barnes, Executive Editor--The Weekly Standard
"This is Mohler in his most natural habitat, doing what he does best. If you are a pastor or elder, if you are an owner or CEO, if you are in any form of leadership, I am convinced that this book will transform the way you lead. I highly recommend that you read it." --Tim Challies, Pastor, Grace Fellowship Church, Toronto; owner of challies.com
"For any one currently in a position of leadership, or anyone who aspires to a position of leadership, this book is a necessity." Douglas Wilson, author and blogger

I don't see this book as a how to manual on leadership but rather as a picture of what an effective leader looks like. Seeing the example, we understand what we are to imitate. Becoming a leader simply means being put in the role. However, as Mohler puts it, "you can serve in a leadership position and never really lead." So this book helps to show the qualities of leading (centering on conviction), the qualities of a leader (such as being a deep thinker), and some of the things a leader has to interact with (such as time or the media). These different ideas are put into 25 qualities which each get their own chapter. Most of the qualities can be studied by themselves but all would be necessary for leader to be effective. Al Mohler goes details of the quality while providing examples, from his life and others, to see the quality in action. To people who are in clear leadership roles and to people who will be in leadership roles, I highly commend this book as it is an easy read.

I have a lot of respect of Al Mohler. I listen to "The Briefing" almost religiously and have recently read his book "We Cannot Be Silent." It does not take meticulous observation to notice that Dr. Mohler is a man of conviction. Everything he says, writes, and shares--exudes a passion for the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is exactly that passion and deep seated belief that is the reason he is such an effective leader.
That is what "Conviction to Lead" is about. In each chapter Mohler goes through a leadership principle. Chapters range from communication to belief. Passion to power. Each principle is Biblically based, and Mohler ties in experiences from his own life to hammer the points home. The primary thrust of this book is that: truly effective leaders have true convictions. Because they are so driven by what they believe, passion exudes their persona. This conviction is therefore the essential foundation to any leader, and without it--no one will follow. But conviction alone is not enough. It must be paired by communication, competency, knowledge, vision...etc (as discussed in the book).
My favorite chapter surprisingly is the one entitled "The Leader and Death." In it, Mohler tells about an interesting artifact that can be found on his writing desk. "A realistic model of a human skull. Mohler explains:
"If you look at some of the most historic portraits in the historic tradition, you will see a skull in the painting. This was known as memento mori, the memory of death, which was intended to motivate the subject of the painting to make the most of the time given to him...It is a constant reminder of mortality as essential to the human condition, and an impetus to be aware that every passing day removes one tick from the column marked Future and adds to the column marked past." Death, according to Mohler is the great motivator--that reminds us that our time here is short, and one day we will be held accountable for the time allotted us.
All in all this is a great book. Mohler writes with a background of a visible leader with immense responsibilities. With this background, he speaks of talking to the media and using power--which may appeal more to the executive or mega church pastor. Though I am neither of those, the vast majority of principles are applicable to all who fit under the umbrella of "leadership." I therefore thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who leads.

What to look for in a leader - both in yourself and in others!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 19, 2018Verified Purchase
We live in an age that charisma and personality may be more weighty than conviction and ability that win the leadership contest of the day. While many may aspire to a leadership role (for its glory and power?), we are dearth of inspirational leaders. We only need to ask, 'Do our leaders inspire confidence and trust or desperation?' to know the state of leadership in our society. We read about great leaders of the past, and wonder where ours are. We definitely see and suffer from the consequences of a weak or even bad leader. Make no mistake, good leaders are a gift to us - what a difference they can make! Today we do not demand high standards for our leaders either. We are not looking for men and women of integrity in our public figures. Our tolerance of misconduct may be such that we can be generous to our own. What would become the body that he or she leads? Mohler points out from the beginning that a manager is not a leader, although a leader must manage.
This book tells us that conviction is crucial in a leader, without which you lose the guide in making the difficult decisions one has to make in the role, the strength to withstand and fight opposition, the power to persuade and influence, and the motivation to endure the long haul. Not many us will be leaders in big organisational sense, but most of us are involved in choosing our leaders in one capacity or another, and the book helps us to evaluate our current and potential leaders.
This book is written in a very easy to read style, showcasing perhaps what Mohler preaches about writing and communication? It is pacy, punchy, dotted with colourful illustrations. Basically you can't miss his point, whether you agree with it! In that sense it is effective. Secondly Mohler gives a description of what leadership really entails, leaving us with no unclear terms what it is. We look at leaders from the outside and we see all the gloss, and form the wrong impression. Mohler tells us honestly what the office of a leader is, and the challenges that he or she faces. Then he will tell you, if you can't see yourself facing xyz, then you are not a leader, brutal and honest. He tells us what it takes to be a leader and then tips on how to do the job. It is profitable for youngsters to read this book to evaluate themselves, and to equip themselves if they aspire to be one. He learns from secular wisdom but only subject it to biblical principles. He does distinguishes Christian leadership from others, despite the overlapping.
It all starts with the conviction in our heart - find it, understand it, believe in it - and then seek to perpetuate itthe best you can. Is therefore anything worth fighting for and protecting?

The book’s principles are great. I wish the author would live out such leadership when required at the most critical juncture in his denomination’s history however, in contrast to his book, he arrogantly maintains he knows best, against the backdrop of sober counsel.

The place to start for leadership wisdom
Reviewed in Canada on May 20, 2014Verified Purchase
This book is very, very good. Most books on leadership are all about methods and management, and while the author admits those things are important and he speaks to them in this volume, Al Mohler very correctly explains that solid and effective leadership begins and ends with the leaders convictions. For leadership to truly seek and result in the success of the cause or organization being lead, that leadership must be based upon, nurtured through, and be measured against the truth-based convictions of the leader(s). If leading your organization or movement doesn't start with, persevere in and point toward firmly held convictions which are themselves based solidly in reality and in transcendental or "timeless" truths, no amount of pragmatic methods or strategic management will matter. While this book would benefit any leader at any level, it is particularly beneficial to those at the very top of their organizations and also those in some form of Christian ministry or endeavor as Mohler's biblical Christian worldview is the basis for his own firmly held convictions and comes out in all he writes. The reader benefits from Mohler's own experience as a successful leader in a few different contexts as well as from the wisdom he has gleaned from his own prodigious and varied reading. This book is (thankfully) devoid of corporate-speak, pop-culture and self-improvement jargon and is written clearly and argued plainly, making it accessible for anyone, including those for whom this is their first entry into leadership literature. This book will remain as relevant and timeless as the truths it is based upon. Very highly recommended.

Such a helpful and challenging read as a young pastor cutting my teeth in the unique role of leadership. Mohler faithfully helps us thinking biblically and also in ways that find application in our current context of history. I just wish the book was twice as long 🙂
