Levi has worked very hard to find a private corner of the world where his past can’t catch up to him. His life, with its fourteen-hour days working in the ranch’s kitchen, is a little humdrum, but he likes it that way. And it’s safe, because he lets no one get close.
While cutting onions one day, Cassidy sees a clip of a documentary on TV, and lo, he sees his old friend Levi, who he’s been looking for for years. The next day, he’s traveling west to Wyoming, taking a job as a chef at a guest ranch.
When Cassidy shows up in his kitchen, Levi’s world is turned upside-down.
A gay m/m cowboy romance with opposites attract, emotional scars, grumpy/sunshine, friends from childhood, and desire that simply won’t go away. A little sweet, a little steamy, with a guaranteed HEA.

About the author

Jackie North has been writing stories since grade school and her dream was to someday leave her corporate day job behind and travel the world. She also wanted to put her English degree to good use and write romance novels, because for years she’s had a never-ending movie of made-up love stories in her head that simply wouldn’t leave her alone.
Luckily, she discovered m/m romance and decided that men falling in love with other men was exactly what she wanted to write about. In this dazzling new world, she turned her grocery-store romance ideas around and is now putting them to paper as fast as her fingers can type. She creates characters who are a bit flawed and broken, who find themselves on the edge of society, and maybe a few who are a little bit lost, but who all deserve a happily ever after. (And she makes sure they get it!)
She likes long walks on the beach, the smell of lavender and rainstorms, and enjoys sleeping in on snowy mornings. She is especially fond of pizza and beer and, when time allows, long road trips with soda fountain drinks and rock and roll music. In her heart, there is peace to be found everywhere, but since in the real world this isn’t always true, Jackie writes for love.

Levi and his mother have been on the run, hiding from his father his entire life. He’s been taught to keep to himself, fly under the radar. When he shows up in the wrong homeroom at his new school, Cassidy is immediately drawn to “the most beautiful boy in the school”. After a year of adventures, drawing closer to one another, tragedy strikes and Levi disappears.
A decade later, through a twist of fate, the are reunited at the Farthingdale Ranch. Secrets are revealed, love is rekindled, and as adults they are able to choose their future and each other.
This books has all the feels. I cried, I laughed and my heart stopped a few times. The dialog between these two is so warm and genuine, they really want what is best for the other and their commitment to each other is beautiful. There is a perfect balance between sweet and sexy, and very scene unfolds at a perfect pace. And the cameos by previous MC’s, especially Kit, who I adore, makes this book pitch perfect.

The cook in this instance is Levi, a somewhat exaggerated depiction of him on the cover.
If you are a fan of this series you will get an abundance of interactions with other members of the ranch, most particularly Kit, who became Brody's boyfriend at the end of the previous installment. Given the rough start to the reunion that Cassidy forces on Levi (read the blurb) this interaction turns out to be as important as the love story and ties a lot of the loose ends from the previous books.
There is no need to go into all these incidents--just get this one and have a wonderful time figuring out how things will turn out and then sit back and wait for the final book which ought to be another tour-de-force.

I've enjoyed this series from the beginning, this story is no exception. Levi is the strong silent head Chef of the ranch, while Cassidy is a young love he lost long ago. A chance news documentary brings Cassidy back into his life and to his arms.
It's a good second chance romance for two characters that have good chemistry. My only real critisism is that there was alot of thoughts and turmoil about their past when I wish there had been more about them in present time. Yes the back story was good but I think there was too much time spent on it.
Feels: This was definitely a sweet hot cocoa with a huge dollop of marshmallow on top!
Drama: Scene at the Rusty Nail that continues somewhat from Kit’s story in The Wrangler and the Orphan and ends with satisfying conclusion. The story behind why Levi left North Tarrytown.
Heat: 2/5
Characters: Levi is absolutely adorable. He just needs ALL the hugs! I love how Cassidy is so determined and fearless going after what and whom he wants - “I licked you. You’re mine.” Cue the squee. Cassidy also bestows his sunshininess upon others at Farthingdale Ranch, especially Kit - it was lovely to see their friendship develop
Pacing: Medium
Length: Read 4 hours straight through
Ending: HEA. The free bonus download is a MUST. It’s truly an epilogue not to be missed… one side-effect: I immediately needed to reread Honey From the Lion.
