Jack is the least pretentious recipe writer I have ever had the pleasure to read, and this book is full of substitutions and options - all with hilarious realness. These are empowering recipes. I have not found the units of measure difficult to adapt to my US kitchen. I am using a cheapo thrift store food scale for dry measures in grams.

I loved Jack Monroe’s earlier cookbook, A Girl Called Jack, where she listed recipes she to feed herself and Small Boy (as she calls her son) for £10 (about U.S. $12.50) per week in 2012. Well, Jack’s back with Cooking on a Bootstrap, which boasts 100 more recipes. A few are too similar to what was in A Girl Called Jack and some weren’t to my taste (fish paste? Beetroot Chocolate Loaf Cake? Green Juice? No thanks), but I really enjoyed the recipes overall and will be trying them out.

Despite some of them being cheaper than US$1 and often derived from canned foods and pantry staples, they’re pretty delicious. Jack was even able to impress diners at a posh restaurant with one of her dishes, showing that you don’t have to spend a lot to eat well. Her homemade breads, Pappa al Pomodoro, Sausagne, Tarka Daal, Pear and Almond Tart and more — all made so cheaply — will delight foodies and the cash-strapped alike. Highly recommended.

Borrowed a copy of her second from the library, and to be honest, it didn't work for me.
She's well back on form with this one though.
Aimed at tasty, economical and healthy easy meals, mostly vegetarian/vegan, which is fine with me. Meat is expensive.
Lots of useful tips for unconfident/novice cooks.
Some of the comments made me laugh out loud! Lovely illustrations, and clear and simple instructions.

This book, like Jack's first, is just brilliant. I don't usually buy cookery books. I'm no great cook. I find it hard to drum up enthusiasm to create meals. Open a Jack book though and that all changes. Made the Sausagne the first weekend I got this - so easy, so tasty and so simple. I really like the fact that all the recipes are made from ingredients you probably already have in the cupboard. Fantastic for the budget-conscious family (and also for the eco-conscious as many recipes are veggie or vegan). I will be using this a lot. Highly recommended.

I felt completely cheated by this book. There is no description of this book as being a vegan cookbook, but it basically is. literally half the book is taken up with bread and breakfast recipes and I cannot feed my family with this sort of recipe. I was hoping for interesting and balanced evening meals. What you are offered here is many variations on a basic offering with Indian spices . so unless you love vegan curry, don't bother. I cannot see what all the fuss is about. Miguel Barclay is much better and more interesting, suggesting meat and fish based family meals for under £1 a head.
