CM Hyper 212 EVO Review – Excellent Cooling, but assembly difficulties
Purchased this CPU Cooler due to my CPU running hot as of late. It is a 6-year old computer with an AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black CPU running at up to 3100 MHz and I don’t overclock. Not sure if it was due to the age of my CPU, or the Stock CPU cooler, or maybe background software conflicts causing stress on the CPU. But it was reaching 70+ deg.C. I suspected my Thermal Paste had dried out, and it had. So I cleaned the contact area and reapplied the Thermal Paste without any appreciable improvement. So after researching CPU coolers, I purchased and installed the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO. Wow – what a significant difference. It now runs 31 – 35 deg.C. HAPPY ;-)The problems are these:1) Excellent diagrams, but ZERO verbal info.2) Hardware design weaknesses.3) Hardware life concerns. The 1st problem is that you need to interpret which diagrams should be followed: AMD vs. Intel. – not too difficult.Step 2 was to apply the Thermal Paste – I’m glad I waited on that. You need to install the supports and experiment with the placement first.Installing the CPU cooler supports was a lesson in frustration. On my previous CPU cooler, the backplate was threaded, just thread the screws from the front. But with this, you must insert the set-off screws from the front, put the back-plate on the screws, and mount the hex-nuts without dropping them. The screw has a flat side on the threads and needs to be turned just right, to fit the hole in the back-plate. Then to tighten the nut, you use a Phillips-head screwdriver to drive the provided nut-driver bit to tighten the nut (confused? - Look at the diagram 09 & 10 in an attached pic). The other problem is that the tool would not work in the tight space (see close-up), so I had to use a small open-end wrench.I then experimented with the location of the CPU Cooler to check the fit with the neighboring components, and how the attaching frame would be connected. I found that the Cooler had to be oriented differently from my original plans. I experimented with the frame center-pin which had a tightening spring – I never could figure out the purpose or what position it was supposed to be in – no information is provided.I then applied the Thermal Paste – amount not made clear in the instructions, so I used about a third, only to find out that it was too much. The excess oozed out, and though I tried to wipe away most of it, some is on the CPU mounting board at the edge of the CPU (see pic). Not happy about that and I’m hesitant to remove the Cooler and then CPU to clean it up and try again!Mounting the Cooler with the X-shaped scissor-frame was a bit of a challenge, but doable. After mounting the fan on the Cooler, they show mounting brackets to a fan before mounting it to the Cooler. You are forced to conclude that this diagram is if you want to buy and mount a second fan, though that is not made clear. And should it be mounted blowing in or out (against or with the initial fan direction). The CPU Cooler fan has a range of about 600 to 2000 rpm. Mine is currently running at about 1000 to 1150 rpm, and is quiet. I can’t hear it over the other installed fans – total of 6 case fans, plus graphics card fan and power supply fan. It is an oversized Tower-Case that replaced a previous desktop case when it was used as a Home Entertainment PC. So the Cooler fan is very quiet at this half-rated speed, but before I had gotten the speed tweaked, and it jumped up to full speed, I witnessed that it can get rather loud.Note that this CPU Cooler is large – it would not have fit in ANY of my past standard-sized cases. Be aware, this will only fit in an oversized case, or you would have to cut a hole in your case as a few others have.I have only a few days of experience with this CPU Cooler, but so far it has definitely proven to be the right buy for me. Unlike a few others, I have not encountered any manufacturing defects. A more convenient attachment frame and some verbal information provided with the already good diagrams would make this a superior CPU Cooler for anyone with a large computer case.

I've always used the stock cooler that came with my CPUs because my logic was that those coolers are designed to work with those CPUs and I don't over clock therefore did not need a bigger cooler.

However, I started having over heating issues on my PC. My guess was maybe the stock CPU cooler just wasn't doing its job as well anymore. I'd start up a game and within a couple minutes my PC would shut down and then start back up.

After doing some researching my two options were either get a new PSU as a failing power supply can cause the issues I was having or I could buy a new CPU cooler since I noticed that my computer was idling mid to high 50 degree Celsius. And would jump to the high 60s and mid 70s under gaming load.

Obviously I went for the cheaper option and bought this bad boy. Let me just say outright that I wish I had bought this or a similar cooler a lot earlier.

As you'll read in other reviews this thing is really quiet. The stock CPU upon pressing the power on my case to turn on my PC would spin up to max and slowly drop down to idle speeds as the PC booted up. Not really too big of a deal but it was quite a noticeable noise upon start up. However, with this CPU I no longer have that noise. I caught myself the other day pressing the button and pausing because I wasn't sure if the PC was actually booting or not because of how quiet it was. Even as I sit at my PC and take my headset off and try to hear the PC I hear nothing. No more fan noise. I used to not mind the minor fan noise that came from my PC, but compared to how quiet it is now those stock coolers are loud.

Another thing im quite impressed with is just how well it cools. I went from idling in the mid 50s down to low 40s and sometimes even lower into the high 30s if I have my AC on and my room is cooler. Just idling is almost a 20 degree difference on my system. And of course under load it maintains an almost 20 degree difference between stock and this cooler.

I've yet to hit 60 degrees while playing any game since I've installed this cooler. It barely gets above the mid 50 degree range under load and I've tested multiple games and over a longer period of time and it maintained its temp in that range. I've kept an eye on temps ever since I've installed it and over the course of a week or so temps have not returned to pre cooler levels. So you know its not a fluke.

My biggest complaint is that the instructions that it comes with aren't exactly crystal clear and it took me a minute or two to sit and make out what exactly the pictures were supposed to be depicting. However, a quick video search on youtube cleared things right up and I got it installed. Over all not too complicated of an install. Its all fairly straight forward once you understand what to do. One thing to keep an eye on is the size of this bad boy. While it wasnt quite as big as I was expecting, it is still pretty big. Make sure you look at its dimensions and know the dimensions of your case to ensure that it will fit in with the panels on.

This cooler does come with some thermal paste with which to apply and install the cooler but I had some higher quality stuff laying around from a previous mother board upgrade/replacement so I used it instead. I'm not sure of the quality of the thermal paste that comes with the cooler but I'd probably spend a couple extra bucks and buy you a high quality paste alongside your order of this cooler just to be safe.

I should note that previously I only had 2 case fans installed in my case. Both of which were exhaust fans. When I ordered this cooler I ordered a double pack of the fans found at this link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F6S10KK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

So this cooler isn't the sole upgrade I did and I have since ordered another single pack of the fan I linked and a molex adapter so I'll now go from just 2 exhaust fans to 3 intake and 2 exhast. My point is, your differences may not be as drastic as mine as I've made other cooling upgrades to aid this cooler, even then the cooler itself has proven to be putting in work. I wish I would've gotten one sooner.

5 star would recommend and would buy again if I ever did another build.

I've been buying cheap cooling solutions for years now trying to cut corners. At one point, my old rig would hit 80c just idling. New machine, new mindset. The first thing I aimed to do was buy a CPU cooler. I've been looking at reviews for about a month now trying to find the right one. I settled on the EVO because I liked the look of the heatpipes and the contact point with the processor. Along with the EVO, I bought two Cougar CF-V12HP fans to use in a push/pull. Prior to installing the cooler and fans, the CPU would idle at around 40c with my case fans and CPU fan at full blast. I don't recall exact numbers when gaming, but the temps had to be in the 50's at least. The air from the exhaust fan was quite warm. After install, idle temps are down to 22c with the CPU and case fans going at around 70% (still pretty silent). This is after OC'ing my Phenom II X2 555BE to 3.85 Ghz. After running prime95 for hours while torrenting and watching movies, the temp maxed at 37c. Never had to bump up the speed on the fans either. I've seen some negative reviews out there, and my only explanation for those reviews is the unit wasn't properly installed. Installing can be a bit tricky as the instructions are pretty poor, but once properly installed, works like a beast. If you are looking for an affordable CPU cooling solution with great return, this is it.

Pros

- Very nicely designed processor-heatpipe contact point.
- Fan is awesome. Using it as a case fan and I can't hear it over my other case fans while it's spinning at 1000 RPM. It also moves A LOT of air. Not exaggerating on this one. At 1000 RPM, you can really feel the air moving. On full blast, I dare say it moves about as much air as my San Ace 109r1212h1011 (although it is a lot louder).
- I opted not to use it, but thermal paste is included.
- Removing and installing fans is a breeze.
- When installed correctly, this will drop your temps. Period.

Cons

- Instructions are pretty bad. If you get stuck, there are some YouTube vids that are helpful.
- This thing is pretty massive. Not so much a con as much as it is a warning. This thing came close to hitting the side of my case, it sticks out that far.

Usually I’m a Noctua guy, but this seems on par with that and the more expensive stuff. It has a good reputation for a reason! Using with a i7-9700 which keeps it very cool and quiet. Much quieter than the previous intel stock cooler. I also appreciate the hum of the fan (when you can hear it) is a lower pitch. Really impressed with this one.
