My particular fan made consistent noises coming from the fan motor, regardless of speed. Swapped the Arctic Bionix fan that came with the heatsink, and temperatures rose as much as 5°C, changing nothing but the fan. It's only saving grace was that the RGB implementation is beautiful, and using the more standard 4-pin RGB connector, can be connected to most motherboards directly. that gives it an extra star.
Definitely being sent back though. Too bad.
- Moves a decent amount of air, even at low RPMs
- Quiet, but with a caveat (see cons)
- RGB LEDs are just bright enough
- By far the biggest pro: RGB LEDs can be controlled by the motherboard, without having to rely on a controller.
- Fan has a stand out grinding noise, consistent with other reviews on this fan
- Easily the loudest fan in my case, mostly due to the grinding noise
- PWM power connector and RGB connector are both INCREDIBLY short
From my short time with this fan, it is a good fan for those looking to add more RGB to their rig without breaking the bank. By far the most stupid trend in current RGB standards is the use of controllers. The price of these controllers ultimately leads to a single working RGB fan to cost upwards of $40. For three fans, it's usually $80-100. It's simply a ridiculous trend. This fan can come with a controller, but it is NOT necessary for the RGB to function on the fan. This is a great move by Cooler Master and it did ultimately influence my choice of buying the fan.
The RGB lights are not overly bright, but they are not dim enough for it to be a cause of issue. I like to say that these are nearly on "perfect brightness." It's not so noticeable that it draws away from other components, but it is not dim enough for me to consider buying another RGB fan. The color of the LEDs are fairly accurate, except for white, which is JUST BARELY red-tinted. This can be excused since a lot of RGB LED strips and other RGB components tend to have the same issue.
It moves a decent amount of air. Not exceptional, but certainly not terrible. It's ideal as a low RPM rear exhaust fan.
My biggest gripe with this fan is the noise that it creates. The tone of the bearing itself is actually not even noticeable, and at low RPMs you can't hear the moving air. There is a distinct grinding noise that I have heard from other fans (Raidmax, I'm looking at you). I'm not sure if this is due to an incorrect implementation of FDB (fluid-dynamic bearing) bearings but the grinding noise takes away from the otherwise very quiet and good looking fan. If I didn't have a founder's edition graphics card, these would EASILY be the loudest fan in my case, including the two EK Vardar fans on my radiator. This is consistent with other reviews found on this site and on Newegg, although it seems that mine is not as bad as others. Ultimately this is an inexcusable flaw that draws away from a great fan.
The connectors on this fan are abominably short. My Corsair HD120 fans were long enough to go around the back of my motherboard and had lots of extra room to maneuver, which lead to fairly clean cable management. However I had to route the cables of these fans around the inside of my case, which basically ruined my "perfect cable management." I have a mid-tower case housing the gaming system this is in, and to not have adequate space in a mid-tower case is simply inexcusable as well. This is more of a minor gripe but it had to be said.
Aside from the couple of minor issues, this fan is ultimately great. It will fit in well with any RGB system, and it syncs with your motherboard without needing a controller. If they found out a way to take out the grinding noise with their FDB bearings and fixed the length of connectors, this would be a perfect fan. It is still a good choice among those who don't care too much about noise, and go mostly for performance and looks.
Now even if you do have a RGB connection on your motherboard this will make it easier to treat them as addressable. With this you can easily manage the colors of your RGB fans and LED strips.
The logo on the top lights up as well but I think it may only be white.
4 channels of RGB LED control.
Magnetic back so you can place it anywhere in a steel case without adhesives.
Software is poorly documented and generally frustrating. Once I had it set the way I wanted it, I find myself disinclined to go back and change it due to the frustrating UI.
It would be better if:
I would prefer it if all 4 channels of LED power/control had their connectors on one side of the plastic case. In my use application, a longer, thinner box with all the cables coming from one side would make the rats nest of wires easier to manage.
