The Asus 1201N netbook runs hotter than the other notebook computers in my life, so I wanted to try something with a fan.

The Cooler Master Notepal U1 is just the right size for the Asus 12-inch computer. It's also a good fit for 10-inch and 14-inch computers.

This model comes with a single fan. The larger U2 model comes with two. The fan blows air at the computer, which I think is more effective than fans that draw warm air away, as many of the others do. The fan is barely audible. You can position the fan at the point beneath the stand where it's needed most, and with the 1201N computer the left side is definitely where the fan is needed. I don't know of any other cooling stand where you can do that.

I can tell this is working because I no longer feel the heat in my lap. Before, it was warm enough that I imagined the meat in my thigh was slow cooking. I had been using a stand that raises the computer and lets air flow beneath it, between the computer and the lap board, but there was no fan.

The Notepal stand is cleverly designed for taking along when you leave home. It's very light in weight. You remove the fan from the underside of the stand, and position the computer in its place, so the high end of the stand wraps around one of the longer sides of the computer. There are rubberized surfaces on the stand to protect the computer. This assembly fits inside the notebook case I'm using. The fan fits in an outside pocket. The fit inside the case is snug enough that I don't need the strap they included with the stand to bind the stand and computer together.

The Notepal U1 and U2 cooling stands might be the best ever made. I don't work for the company. If after reading this they send me something free, I'll update this review to let you know.

This is generally a great-seeming product. the stand itself is nicely made, attractive, and ideal for our 11" Alienware laptops. The fan likewise seems well made - but after a month of gentle use the Coolermaster fan failed. It now intermittently makes grinding noises and slows down. There's nothing obstructing the fan, and I suspect that either the bearing went out or whatever is holding the spindle flat has failed.

We contacted Coolermaster directly, and while they offer a product warranty, they don't consider licensed Amazon sellers as retailers. Instead, their customer rep says that we bought a 'used item in a private sale from a reseller, even if it was new in box'.

In other words, this turned out to be a premium-priced product that failed to work and for which the warranty is not honored by the manufacturer. We'll now try to sort this out with Amazon. Buyer beware!

Bought the product two months ago. Was satisifed with being able the place the fan where I wanted. But already the fan is out of alignment and has become incredibly loud. Just not a well built product.

This works great for my Alienware M11x. It is the perfect size for it. The only issue I have is the design of the usb plug for the fan. The wire sticks out the side of it since it has a usb passthrough in the back.. My issue being on my laptop the usb plugs are close together to save space and I cant get a device in the nearby usb unless I move things around and still it kind of puts force on the nearby usb port device.

I have a small laptop so others might not have this issue, just see if your usb ports are spaced out well, or reconfigure which port its plugged into. Also make sure you position the fan right under the laptops intake area which is visible on your laptop. This might not be good for larger laptops over 15", mine is 11.6" and it fits perfect.

Had seen the larger version of this Cooler Master NotePal U1 Laptop Cooling Pad in use recently, and what was most impressive was the ergonomic design allowing for a good viewing angle and keyboard use. Wasn't thinking about cooling as much as pure working functionality when I looked at it, but when comparing two side-by-side identical computers, one with and one without, it gave me reason to check my own MacBook Pro, and the results were surprising. I bought it here, but first here are the pros and cons:

Likes:

+ Sturdy perforated aluminum chassis; rubber pads keep computer in place
+ Easily accommodates a 13" MacBook Pro; works with 14" notebooks as well
+ Ergonomic design allow for excellent viewing angle; comfortable with keyboard
+ 80mm fan is moveable; can be placed wherever necessary for max efficiency
+ Fan has a protective grid; minimizes chance of cord or items getting caught
+ Fan is quiet; not distracting in its operation
+ USB fan plug is a pass-through and in series; you don't lose a port

Dislikes:

- None so far

In Use:

Had recently upgraded my MacBook Pro from 4GB to 8GB RAM in preparation for an OS X 10.8 upgrade. Had noticed that it seemed slightly warmer, but wasn't too concerned. An associate had suggested that I download the free smcFanControl for Mac app (available on the 'Net), so I did. Found that the computer was running at 76-78°C when under load with 16+ browser tabs open or when doing heavy photo editing.
