The Cooler Master Notepal U1 is just the right size for the Asus 12-inch computer. It's also a good fit for 10-inch and 14-inch computers.
This model comes with a single fan. The larger U2 model comes with two. The fan blows air at the computer, which I think is more effective than fans that draw warm air away, as many of the others do. The fan is barely audible. You can position the fan at the point beneath the stand where it's needed most, and with the 1201N computer the left side is definitely where the fan is needed. I don't know of any other cooling stand where you can do that.
I can tell this is working because I no longer feel the heat in my lap. Before, it was warm enough that I imagined the meat in my thigh was slow cooking. I had been using a stand that raises the computer and lets air flow beneath it, between the computer and the lap board, but there was no fan.
The Notepal stand is cleverly designed for taking along when you leave home. It's very light in weight. You remove the fan from the underside of the stand, and position the computer in its place, so the high end of the stand wraps around one of the longer sides of the computer. There are rubberized surfaces on the stand to protect the computer. This assembly fits inside the notebook case I'm using. The fan fits in an outside pocket. The fit inside the case is snug enough that I don't need the strap they included with the stand to bind the stand and computer together.
The Notepal U1 and U2 cooling stands might be the best ever made. I don't work for the company. If after reading this they send me something free, I'll update this review to let you know.
As far as suggested improvements, my Chromebook slides off of the cooling pad due to the angle I mentioned earlier. The rubber pads that are (I believe) designed to grip the laptop don't work well. In addition, the little tabs in the cooling fan that attach to the holes in the grid don't match well. So you have to really press hard to get the misaligned tabs into the holes.
But overall, I like it, especially how USB supplies the power - no need for AC. I give it 4-stars.
We contacted Coolermaster directly, and while they offer a product warranty, they don't consider licensed Amazon sellers as retailers. Instead, their customer rep says that we bought a 'used item in a private sale from a reseller, even if it was new in box'.
In other words, this turned out to be a premium-priced product that failed to work and for which the warranty is not honored by the manufacturer. We'll now try to sort this out with Amazon. Buyer beware!
We are sorry to hear you had trouble with our cooler. The cooler in question has full warranty with us directly. Would you be able to contact us to let us know the name of the rep you spoke to so we can clarify and rectify the situation in your favor?
This cooling pad specifically has a few pros: It is very lightweight, it has a nice finish and looks good, and the theory behind a configurable USB fan is a great idea. This is where the pros end, though.
Because of it's peculiar design and shape, you'll have a really hard time putting this thing on your lap without some sort of tray or flat surface to support it. The pictures are misleading, it looks like it should be a "J" form via the pictures, when it really is more like a "V" shape, which puts your hardware at a tilted 45-degree angle. This might work for some people, but it angles my keyboard uncomfortably, and forces me to tilt the screen up to see anything. The light-grey rubber pieces on the angled surface are meant to hold your laptop in place, but these have never worked. My ultrabook fits on the surface perfectly, yet it always tries to slide off the pad - even on a perfectly flat/still coffee table.
The entire reason for purchasing this item - the movable fan - was also a huge disappointment. Yes, it does what it advertises - pushing cool air into the intake vents - but the fan its self is of very poor quality. I read this in reviews before I made the purchase, but decided to chance it anyways. Bad move on my part. Lots of random scrapes, whirs, hums, and vibrations seem to plague this fan unit even when it is operating at a constant and low RPM. Fans of better quality do not have this issue, but unfortunately the caged fan housing design is proprietary, which means the average user can't just swap out the stock fan with something of better quality very easily.
Bottom line is the concept is good, but the execution falls way short. Until they are able to improve the design and use quality parts for the fan, go with a different cooling pad solution. I know I am.
