Coping Skills is a poignant and tender story that will give your feelings a workout and your psyche a book hangover but believe me, it’s well worth it.
Elena is heartbroken, exhausted, and just barely possesses the will to return to Marycliff after the devastating summer her family has experienced. She is relieved to escape to Marycliff, however, guilt and sorrow have cast a shadow over her once carefree and fun personality. She has avoided Daniel for weeks but the chemistry they had during their brief fling returns in full force when she sees him again. She knows it’s wrong to let him believe they could be more than friends with benefits, but he’s the one person she knows she can count on to make her troubles disappear, if only for a little while.
The way Daniel cares for Elena will melt your heart. He is patient and strong and wants desperately to help her heal. He’s willing to wait it out until Elena is able to commit to the love he knows they both feel for each other. Until she pushes him away one time too many. He has been used before and won’t subject himself to that again.
This is such a lovely story about coping with change and tragedy ! As always, Ms. MacMillan’s characters are beautifully defined, their dialogue is realistic and their journey full of meaning.
I've been following this series since the beginning. And like with many series, some books you may like better than others. This was one that I certainly liked better.
Daniel and Elena were first introduced in a previous book. I liked them immediately so I was not only happy that they were getting their own story, but more so that it would be together. Elena seemed like a good friend and Daniel a really good guy in general. This book showed me even more.
Daniel wasn't your typical nice guy or bad boy. He wasn't a typical jock or nerd. He was this great blend of nice guy who was also a nerdy jock. He had a big heart that he wanted to share and after meeting Elena, that's who he wanted to share it with.
Elena on the other hand has just had the worst summer of her life and she isn't dealing well. Daniel presents as an amazing distraction and she can't resist. But the stressors in her life begin to be too much and Daniel's special brand of charm and persistance my not be enough to overcome Elena's hurt and emotional walls.
I loved the feeling and emotions in this story. I really connected with both characters, Daniel especially. I had those great book moments where I hurt when they hurt and I sometimes wanted to throttle them. But I always kind of understood where they were coming from. It helped me to just enjoy as I read and helped with my overall connection.
I continue to enjoy Jerica's work and look forward to more from her in future.
So, Daniel and Elena. Not a couple I would have expected to come together as they did. But their journey was absolutely beautiful.
Two happy-go-lucky people briefly came together but were torn apart by Elena suffering great tragedy in her home life. Her drawing back and behaviour towards Daniel might not have been the best, but the best she could do, before realising otherwise.
This story took me on a journey, a heartbreaking journey, filled with emotions, and some tough questions about life, how we want to live it and how much influence we have over others and how they live it.
The author beautifully wove together two stories over coping and overcoming tragedies, sometimes more successful, sometimes less. But always trying to find their way back to what truly matters. Artfully written, truly tragic and certainly worth a read. Now I can't wait any longer for the next one, Coop needs a story ;)
Elena had a traumatic summer. Her father had an accident and a brain trauma changed him. Ever since he's not the same and that has affected Elena greatly.
Daniel had met Elena at the beginning of that summer, before her father's accident and they had hit it off, but then Elena stopped being in touch. When they meet again, Daniel tries to pursue her, but Elena makes it clear that she doesn't want relationships.
"Daniel was a good guy. Understanding, sweet, and could fudge like a god. And all of that made him both tempting and dangerous."
This was my first book by Jerica and it was quite enjoyable. I liked her writing a lot and I think that it had a lot of potential. I definitely want to read more by her. However, I didn't like the heroine that much and how she treated Daniel. I definitely understand it wasn't easy for her, but still many of her actions didn't make a lot of sense to me and I thought that Daniel could make her work for it. Also, the ending was kind of rushed in my opinion. I definitely would have liked to see more from them, but maybe the author plans to make a novella about it or write a bonus scene or something?
I believe that it was a lovely story and I loved that the romance was diverse/multicultural? With the hero being black and the heroine Spanish. And I don't mean any offence using these terms, I'm just not certain how I should describe them. Anyway, kudos on that! I'm very intrigued to read more by her.
