About the Author

James Maxwell grew up in the scenic Bay of Islands, New Zealand, and was educated in Australia. Devouring fantasy and science-fiction classics from an early age, his love for books translated to a passion for writing, which he began at the age of eleven.

Inspired by the natural beauty around him but also by a strong interest in history, he decided in his twenties to see the world. He relocated to London and then to Thailand, Mexico, Austria, and Malta, developing a lifelong obsession with travel. It was while living in Thailand that he seriously took up writing again, producing his first full-length novel, Enchantress, the first of four titles in his internationally bestselling Evermen Saga.

Darn it! This is Book 3 in the four book Shifting Tides young adult fantasy series. and Book 4 will not be published until next January. It is series that should be read in order. Not only do you need to learn about the worlds and past conflicts to understand the current conflicts, each book ends with the set up for the next book. Also, there are continuing characters who learn and grow. They discover new talents and suffer new wounds. We have two main protagonists, Chloe and Dion. Each of them is interesting and strong enough to carry their storyline this sweeping tale of the high seas, magic, heroes, villains, and war. Chloe continues in this volume as a strong young female protagonist. She is intelligent and resilient. She may be a princess, but she is not waiting to be rescued. Dion’s story picks up where it left off in the previous book. He is the new king after the death of his older brother. Chloe is believed dead in her home country and Dion’s. It is a good story, and it is told well. James Maxwell describes many different settings in excellent detail. It is lush. The book contains adventures, dangers, treachery, some violent images of attacks by fantasy creatures, warfare and torture, politics, and magic that is used for good and for evil. Once again, revenge is on the table. There is no graphic sex although there are is an unplanned pregnancy and hints of romance. I found it easy to get caught up in the story. It is a quick read. I feel certain that I will read the next one.

This books flows smoothly from the last book, hardly missing even a breath, no catch up no back story, those details were cleverly woven into this novel, I appreciate a great writer, storyteller . . . If you enjoy a bit of Fantasy I think you'll enjoy this 3rd installment of the Shifting Tides series. Now I have to wait for the next installment . . .

It seems to skip steps sometimes, forcing actions and decisions sometimes unexpected in the sense that they seem to justify the fast pace rather than the narrative, making the story much shorter and straightforward than it could've been. In terms of storytelling, it seems more rushed than the first two books. Nevertheless, it was very captivating and not easy to put down. I enjoyed the adventure tremendously and am really looking forward to the conclusion and the fourth and final (?) of the materia: iron - symbol of fire and war.

I usually read books like this in a couple hours, but found it took me days as I kept setting it down or would read other books instead. I don't know if at this point the storyline is getting away from the author or if there are just too many characters' "voices" in the mix with all the bouncing back and forth. I hope the next book wraps it all up

I like all the characters the pace and the description of it all. This is a great series and it is fast moving. I have arleady pre-ordered book 4 and look forward to seeing how it all ends. I thought the story was going to end in this book so surprise it just dropped off the cliff.

I recommend this series and the Evermen series to those who enjoy and epic story.

The characterisation is good; my only slight gripe is that the alliances and renewed friendships are made a little too easily. I agree with other reviewers that the author's writing style is improving; it is more tightly written with less waffle and it flows very well.

It is clear from the end that there is to be a Book 4, but then if you read James Maxwell you know to expect an epic story in multiple parts. I'm looking forward to the next instalment.

I constantly found myself referring to the map at the start of the book plotting character movements along with the action. Characters are placed in ethical dilemmas around the fate of many vs the desires of one and the lengths one would go to for love. The Copper Chain follows the mythology of the 4 materia created in this refreshing universe and sets up what will be an epic finale in IRON WILL due in January 2018. This book shows improvements in the author's technical skill and also tight editing and proofing.

Best Part of this book: It flows easily allowing you to get excited about and follow the multiple challenges each set of characters faces.
Worst Part: That I will have to wait 6 months for the next epic installment!
