When I first started reading the Crow series I had no idea what to expect, but each book builds on the other and leaves delightful possibilities for going forward.

In this book, it would seem that the next generation is stepping up in all the families, some enjoying it and others ... not so much. The interweaving of the families, their loyalties and goals, and acceptance of the world moving forward is exciting to watch evolve.

I'm very curious about what will happen with Fleet, who is he really and how will he help or harm Lydia long-term, what will/can she do going forward with the families, and oh, that Mr. Smith!

Highly recommend this and can't wait for the next book. No pressure, Sarah, just, well, these books are that good!

Love this supernatural series set in London. Lydia Crow is head of the Crow family, part of a sort of supernatural mafia, and also a private detective. Raised to NOT be a part of said family and to ignore her powers, she’s coming into her own both as part of the family and as someone gifted with supernatural ability to ‘power up’ others. Other families like hers-Pearl, Silver & Fox- are bound by a truce but a high profile murder threatens that truce and Lydia uses her PI skills to find out what’s behind the death. Great characters. Great London setting. Wonderful mix of supernatural ability (no witches, zombies, vampires etc. just power) and detective mystery. LOVE the series.

Do not have to read them in order but it does help to understand the characters better.

So many paranormal authors treat their readers as though they're stupid. There is so much chaff in the genre. Sarah Painter respects her readers. This series is an example of that. Our MC is smart, logical and careful. She is in an ugly world and Painter shows that seedy side. Though the MC isn't an anti hero, she also doesn't rate as a law abiding citizen. She can't, given her Family ties and responsibilities. The story is tightly woven. The characters grow. The plot is allowed complexities, another example of Painter's respect for her readers not being brainless. Start at book one and enjoy an unusual and well written urban fantasy series.

Ok, I finished and now I have to wait until the next book to find out what happens next, and I can't wait. Lydia continues to try to fit her new role as head of the Crows, without having a complete idea of all the job entails, or even all that the Crows are involved in. She finds herself and those she cares about in danger from multiple directions. It's great and leaves the reader in suspense!

She learns and changes with circumstances, and I love that about her. I'll keep on buying this one through to the conclusion, and I adore that I have my own guesses at what it might be.

But, but, but... this book ends on an abrupt cliffhanger. If half stars were possible, this book would get 4 1/2 from me, but I still really enjoyed it.
