The protagonist of the fictional happenings is Toria, a young woman brought to New Smyrna with her parents and oldest sister where she witnessed her parents dying of starvation. After attacking and accidentally killing an overseer attempting to rape her sister, Toria and several companions are helped in escaping the plantation and sure death by Frederick, a highly educated Native American with an agenda of his own.
From here on, Toria's life becomes a contemporary Perils of Pauline. She is abandoned by Frederick but bears his child. She falls in love with Teak, owner of a sea-going ship who promises to return her to Minorca. Instead she is captured by pirates in the Mediterranean ..... and eventually ends up back on the New Smyrna plantation as revolution breaks out in neighboring Georgia.
Although Toria's adventures were a bit of overkill this was an interesting and enjoyable 4-star book.
Well written - finished it in a day or 2 as couldn't stop reading!
Free is worth it but if you have to pay, move on.
