I have two fixtures of the same brand in the 24" length on my 55 gallon aquarium. I've NEVER had a problem with them, so it seems like it's an issue particular to the 30" model. If the next one works like it should, I'll update my rating. Keeping my fingers crossed.
UPDATE: The third one did not work, either. I'm advising you not to order this item. Changed my rating from 2 to 1 star, since I can't give it zero. We gave this model 3 tries, and none of the fixtures worked for more than 4 days. Epic Fail. The only thing we can figure is that the 30" model is made at a different plant, or with different parts other than the light tubes. Something makes it severely inferior to the 24" model.
The first unit to fail did so during the warranty period, and Coralife immediately replaced it. The other two were out of warranty, and the company didn't even respond when told how catastrophically they had failed. After 3 failures that could have possibly started a fire, and the lackluster support from Coralife, I no longer feel comfortable spending my money on their lamps and leaving them running when I'm not around. I strongly encourage you all to skip these lamps, and keep looking for a safer, more reliable setup.
UPDATE: 4 months later and it's dead. This light or it's ballasts must be poorly made. The light flashes on briefly if you tap the top of it, and then it flickers on and off. Additionally the new bulbs I put in about 2 months ago are already very dark on the ends. What a disappointment. I really liked the slim style, and fairly affordable. But all that means nothing if it doesn't work.
I just sent Aqueon an email inquiring about replacement or refund, so we will see how that goes--
***UPDATE: After waiting for a response for 20 days, Aqueon finally got back to me and informed me that they will replace the unit as it is still under the one year warranty. So yeah, customer service appears to be a little slow.

This hood is fine for your average 1/2 planted aquarium with low-medium light plants. If you have a fully planted tank, or you have plants that require high light, then this hood... Read morePublished 13 months ago by Sarahding

I really like these lamps, the combination of bulbs they come with work well for mid-low light freshwater plants, and they give an attractive color cast to the tank. HOWEVER! Read morePublished 19 months ago by Erin Peterson
Works great! After comparing with many other brands, this lamp fixture was the highest rated and best priced out of them all. The past reviews were very helpful as well.Published 19 months ago by Matthew & Dyana
