How did you come up with the idea for this product?

Coravin is the brainchild of Greg Lambrecht, a man with a background in physics, mechanical engineering, and medical devices. Being a lover of wine, Greg was challenged while his wife was pregnant in not being able to enjoy a great glasses of wine, without pulling the cork and committing to the full bottle. He tried preservation systems, but regardless of the preservation method, each time he pulled the cork, oxidation started and he’d have to finish the bottle or waste the remaining wine. His dream was to magically pour wine from bottles without ever pulling the cork, allowing someone to enjoy a bottle again and again, when they desired. And after many years of trial and tribulations, Coravin was born.

Product Description

For centuries, the cork had to be removed in order to enjoy a glass of wine-that era is over. The Coravin System is a transformational new technology that allows users to pour wine whiling keeping the cork in the bottle, where it's been since it was ﬁrst sealed in the winery. Now you can enjoy your favorite and ﬁnest wines by the glass whenever you like, and feel conﬁdent that your wine will be protected until the next glass is poured. Now you can share and enjoy the same bottle, or bottles on multiple occasions, over weeks, months, or even longer - without wasting a drop. How do we do it? When the Coravin System is put in place, a thin, hollow needle is inserted through the cork to extract the wine. The bottle is then pressurized with argon, an inert gas that's in the air we breathe. Once the bottle has been pressurized, the wine flows through the needle and pours into your glass. Once your wine is poured, the needle is removed, and the cork reseals itself. The Coravin System will work best with natural cork closures, including closures made of agglomerated or multi-piece natural cork. It is not intended for use on synthetic closures since they are unlikely to re-seal completely. If you do use the system with a synthetic closure, store the bottle upright afterwards. Synthetic closures will permit some oxidation, and may result in leakage when stored or poured. The Coravin 1000 System cannot be used with metal, glass or screw top closures.

Good wine all the time without waste

I have used the Coravin system for about three months now and have gone through three capsules. This system works as advertised and I'm totally pleased with the results. The three used capsules works out to about a bottle a week where each glass from a bottle is as good as the first one. Since my wife and I don't typically drink a bottle in a twenty four hour period, before Coravin we would end up with a lot of undrinkable, oxidized wine. I have tried other wine preservation methods including the vacuum products (don't work at all in my opinion), the gas back-fill products that are meant to be used after the cork has been pulled (extend the life for a day, maybe two) and the refrigerator (better than vacuum systems and not as good as the previously mentioned gas method). With Coravin, we are drinking better wine, more frequently, and it is costing us less. We are also less concerned about trying out a more expensive wine since we know we will be able to drink all of it and can spread the time out over days or even weeks. The system costs $300 and the cartridges about $10 each, lasting for 3-4 bottles - or about $1 per glass. If you drink a $30 bottle of wine twice a month and leave half behind, as we often did, that's almost $400 of lost wine every year. In this example you recover the cost of the system in less than a year and enjoy better wine all the time. Of course, if you are drinking wines in the under $10 category, only buy a bottle once or twice a year or you usually finish a bottle the same day you open it, then this product is not really for you.

Works well for a while…

It works well while it lasts. After about 6 years the seal no longer works and every time we put a new cartridge in, all of the gas leaks out and those cartridges are not cheap! I don’t use it that often, only go through about 5 cartridges a year. So it’s possible it won’t even last that long if you are a frequent user. At first I thought it was a bad box of cartridges, but I bought more and had same problem. I read online that someone was told by customer service they tightened it too much. I tightened it the same way for 6 years without issue, but never the less tried not tightening as much without success. Another said the black plastic ring from the cartridge could get stuck, but that is not the issue either. We contacted customer service but no one responds.

I've had the Coravin for about a year now and really love what it does. I don't drink a lot of wine and typically want only one glass at a time, so opening a whole bottle presents a conundrum. The Coravin allows me to pull a single glass from a bottle and preserve the rest. I can attest that it really works. I have drawn out a bottle of wine for 2 to 3 months and the last glass was every bit as good as the first. It also works well for Madeira and Port. There is a small learning curve about getting the puncture to seal well - sometimes a drop or so of wine will leak out - but several suggestions have appeared online about putty or wax to address the issue. Also pouring the wine is an odd experience with the back pressure, but again you get used to it quickly. The Argon canisters last quite a while - in a year I'm on my third one - so unless you have an extensive collection and want to drink one glass of each, they should not prove to be a significant expense, particularly not when compared to the bottles of wine.

Overall, I love this product. It saves me money by not requiring me to open the whole bottle for just a glass once in a while!

I bought this Coravin unit a couple of months ago. I wanted to wait and give it a "test run" before reviewing it. First, the cost. Yes, it's expensive. But, how much oxidized wine do you pour down the drain every year? If you're like me, a lot. I'm single, so when I open a bottle I can only drink about a third of the bottle. I've tried recorking, and using the vacuum pumps, and other methods, but they don't work and the wine is ruined the next day. I mainly drink cheap $5 bottles for my everyday wine, but like most wine lovers I occasionally open the more expensive bottles and end up pouring a lot of them out as well. I will probably save at least $200 the first year alone on saved wine I don't have to pour out! The next issue is bottles that have synthetic corks. Natural corks work best because they squeeze the hole shut completely as soon as you pull the needle out. However, I have had success with synthetic corks. As soon as I pull the needle out I quickly insert a rounded toothpick in the hole as far as possible. Then I break off the top of the toothpick and use something to pound the toothpick into the hold until it's even with the top of the cork so I can reuse the Coravin on it. This has worked well for me. Every now and then I get a tiny bit of leakage but not much and the wines always taste good even a few weeks later. The company does not recommend the Coravin on synthetic corks so use my method at your own risk. I love being able to open different bottles depending on the varietal I am craving at the moment, and going back and reusing the Coravin on bottles I have already used it on prior, even weeks ago. So far the wine has always tasted like it did when I first opened it. I am averaging almost exactly what the company says you will get, about 15 glasses, before I have to change the gas. One last thing, when you first get the Coravin make sure the needle is screwed on tightly. Mine was loose and I would think that could cause leakage of the gas.

very costly malfunctioning

i bought this product one year ago and initially was very impressed. within a month i discovered that the argon containers were not working consistently. sometimes they petered out after two or three jets of argon and sometime nothing came out. it did work more times than not but i was using a lot of containers for little benefit. now it is just not functioning. the container for the argon will not screw in properly but go in just enough to have the gas released outside the bottle. given the cost of the containers this is totally unacceptable. i am about to see if thewarranty will be honored.

Brilliant product. Remember it only works for wine with corks...
The reviewer saying the Coravin capsules are a rip off is right, but there is a work-around. Surf the net to find it out. I got the Coravin collar off their argon cylinder and now use the much cheaper Australian canisters made by Winaro.
I find it REALLY easy to use and a delight to know that my nice wine won't go off, and my cheap-skate mentality (waste-not whatever!) is salved when I am not wanting to drain the bottle. So you can afford nicer wine, and drink the odd glass now and then.
Get the video of Bob Parker interviewing the inventor of the Corovin. As he says this is a GAME CHANGER!
