Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A host of board books helps usher in the holiday fun. Shaped like a pumpkin, Corduroy's Trick-or-Treat, illus. by Lisa McCue, features the titular teddy (based on Don Freeman's series hero) as he enjoys a holiday bash. McCue's Corduroy's Merry Christmas has the cast trimming a tree, singing carols, etc.

About the Author

Don Freeman was born in San Diego, California, in 1908. At an early age, he received a trumpet as a gift from his father. He practiced obsessively and eventually joined a California danceband. After graduating from high school, he ventured to New York City to study art under the tutelage of Joan Sloan and Harry Wickey at the Art Students' League. He managed to support himself throughout his schooling by playing his trumpet evenings, in nightclubs and at weddings.

Gradually, he eased into making a living sketching impressions of Broadway shows for The New York Times and The Herald Tribune. This shift was helped along, in no small part, by a rather heartbreaking incident; he lost his trumpet. One evening, he was so engrossed in sketching people on the subway, he simply forgot it was sitting on the seat beside him. This new career turned out to be a near-perfect fit for Don, though, as he had always loved the theater.

He was introduced to the world of Childrens' Literature, when William Saroyan asked him to illustrate several books. Soon after, he began to write and illustrate his own books, a career he settled into comfortably and happily. Through his writing, he was able to create his own theater: "I love the flow of turning the pages, the suspense of what's next. Ideas just come at me and after me. It's all so natural. I work all the time, long into the night, and it's such a pleasure. I don't know when the time ends. I've never been happier in my life!"

Don died in 1978, after a long and successful career. He created many beloved characters in his lifetime, perhaps the most beloved among them a stuffed, overall-wearing bear, named Corduroy.

Don Freeman was the author and illustrator of many popularbooks for children, including Corduroy, A Pocket for Corduroy, and theCaldecott Honor Book Fly High, Fly Low. For more information about Don Freeman, please visit:

My almost two-year-old son loves this book so much that on occasion I have hidden it so I could get a break. The illustrations are cute and very relevant. The story has only a few words per page so it is appropriate for young readers. My only complaint is that the flaps are not as sturdy as alot of other flap books. Still, we have definitely gotten our money's worth out of Corduroy's Christmas.

Contrary to what Amazon's listing says, this book was not authored by Don Freeman. It is "based on a character created by Don Freeman." I bought this book because I loved the Corduroy story so much, but this does not have the simple-yet-deep story-telling quality of Don Freeman's other books. Corduroy in this book has no personality whatsoever.

If you search for Don Freeman books on Amazon, you will get lots of results published in the last 25 years and which are actually authored by other people. Amazon should not be listing Don Freeman as an author on these books. If I publish a book inspired by IT from Stephen King's book, which reads like a cheap imitation of Stephen King, I can't list Stephen King as an author of my book, can I? Can I? If so, I'm missing out on a major money-making opportunity.

I'm giving it 2 stars because the lift-a-flap gimmick is fun.

Every child needs a Christmas book in their collection and this is the perfect one. Join Corduroy when he writes to Santa and he goes out caroling. This beautifuly colored book is filled with flaps to lift and things to find. Corduroy is a cute little bear that your children will love forever. What better way to celebrate Christmas than with a cuddly bear. Your child will want to read this book again and again and so will you!

My 20 year old daughter absolutely loved the corduroy stories when she was a child and I still have her original books. This is the third Corduroy story I sent to my two year old niece, first sending Corduroy's Thanksgiving, which her mother said she read "over, and over, and over etc." So I sent the gift pack of the first Corduroy book which is packaged with a small Corduroy bear, whom my niece carries around wherever she goes. So I sent Corduroy's Christmas and her mother says she just can't put it down. She loves the flaps, the story and most of all, Corduory! A children's classic which I hope never goes out of print.

My 2 year old son went with me to the doctor and we read this over and over in the waiting room. He loved it, so I told him I would order it for him. He was so excited when mail came for him. He enjoys the easy to follow story and lifting the flaps! Merry Christmas, friend!

This book is very colorful and not wordy. I gave it to my 2 year old granddaughter for Christmas and it has become one of her favorite books. She loves to lift the flaps. We have read it over and over. This is a cute book for grandparents to get.
