People always like to poke fun at the science behind The Core, as if that's its one defining factor, but this movie is solid for reasons BEYOND the hokey science. The acting is outstanding, and more importantly the philosophical meat of the story - the social science - is what sells it. There are plenty of "oh no, the world might be ending if we don't save it" movies out there, but The Core remains one of my favorites because it exposes more of the inner struggle, the common man worries, that ordinary heroes thrust into this situation might have. An older mentor just wondering if he'll be able to save his family. An ambitious young officer who has to learn how leading means being responsible for the losses as well as the wins. A good-natured scientist trying to shoulder the burden of leading a team to save 7 billion lives. The idea of sacrificing for the greater good.
You don't watch "The Core" for the science. You watch it for the people at the heart of that science.

I love this movie it has drama without being too unbelievable or stupid. This is a good movie to watch if you enjoy natural disaster genre movies like I do. Real flawed people trying to save the world without being fake or silly. Definitely worth watching! I bought it and watch once a year during winter curled under blanket, popcorn, bad weather outside just to remind me it could be worse. Good acting by a great cast with no sex, swearing, or pointless violence. This could be a good movie for family to watch together.

If you want to be entertained and on the edge of your seat with action, great acting and absorbed in the inter-relational teamwork of these actors you must see this movie!
This movie does not claim to be a Science Documentary so if you are the type who will spend two hours pontificating your scientific brilliance... just skip this movie. The acting and director elevate this movie from a possible "B" to a brilliant "A" performance! The "idiot" military Generals in most SciFi Movies go too far but while it comes close the movie quickly moves on to the selection of the best and brightest acting crew who are perfect for the parts they play and who stay consistent to their character! Nice to be surprised in a positive way! Love this movie!

I like this movie. It's has a lot of action without any of the sex and little foul language; it's just an enjoyable movie. I have not watched this DVD yet as one of the satellite channels has been showing this movie weekly and I watch it then. However, I will watch this one on my computer soon.

Gravity at the earth's core is 3 times that of the surface. At the outer core, you would weigh 3 times your normal weight, so you wouldn't be walking around. In the movie, they talked about pressure, but it's actually about GRAVITY. And they were way off on the heat. They said it's 9,000 degrees. Wrong! The earth's core is hotter than the surface of the sun. There's no material in the universe that could withstand that type of heat. But even if you did have such a material, there's no way you could build a ship of such complexity in 3 months. And it definitely wouldn't be outsourced to some dude living in the desert. The design and implementation would go to Boeing or Lockheed Martin. And lastly, there's no way that just five 200 megaton thermonuclear bombs would have the energy to kick start the core's rotation. We're talking a core the size of mars. The Russian tsar Bomb detonation was 100 megatons. So in essence, you're saying 10 tsar bombs could rotate the planet mars. Give me a break. This movie was so ridiculous from a scientific perspective.. BUT.... it was entertaining as hell. Great acting, great suspense, and just an overall wonderful story. I give it 4 stars!

I was willing to give this three stars out of pity, but boy did it go downhill fast. The best line in the movie came near the beginning when they asked how much to accelerate the prototype to a functioning vehicle. He said $15 Billion, and the military said “would you take a check?” Then the discussion that a credit card was better, as one would get miles. The basic premise of this movie has been done much better before, and the CGI graphics really substituted for a lack of a coherent script. I am not going to nitpick the science, as it really is absurd and you don’t watch movies like this for the science anyway. But then, miles under the crust, they walk out in suits that somehow hold up to the heat and the pressure. Really? Then there were massive diamonds that resulted in a hull breach, and a serious dose of overacting. This was quickly followed by massive overacting by the Zimsky character. And to top it off, the Destiny facility looked very fake; a waste of CGI. The movie really descended into absurdity and became a real waste of time. I have no idea how it got so many rave reviews. It is not a good movie, and movies of this type have been done much better, probably because they didn’t depend so much on CGI.

A beautiful disaster movie finally available on Blu-Ray UK import with an image of beauty. Essential!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 20, 2012Verified Purchase
Often compared, wrongly, ARMAGEDDON, THE CORE remains an exceptional disaster movie, with an ultra-dramatic story (reactivate the core of the earth with atomic bombs, delirium total!) and special-effects sometimes unbelievable.
Of course it does not avoid certain clichés of the genre, some shortcuts scriptwriting easy and good feelings.
But at least this feature film has the distinction of taking the subject seriously. There never dark in parody, action overdose, crappy humor or stupid. In short, the opposite of the ultra-enjoyable ARMAGEDDON.
In addition, THE CORE has action scenes original anthology (the Space Shuttle in perdition, the geode, the "climax" final in the core...), a excellent cast (AARON ECKHART "DARK KNIGHT", Hilary SWANK "MILLION DOLLAR BABY" Stanley Tucci "HUNGER GAMES" and Tcheky KARYO "THE PATRIOT") doped with a realization mastered by Jon Amiel (COPYCAT, ENTRAPMENT)
He previously enjoyed a very good quality DVD from 2004 (very good definition, brilliant colors and perfect contrast).
But here I draw your attention to the fact that Blu-ray UK was released in September 2012.
Let me explain:
- The image is just beautiful and ultra contrast (the "climax" final at the heart of core melt is amazing!) With vivid colors. This film was a real HD remastering. The definition sometimes reaches levels of detail exceptional but has absolutely no pity for the SFX. But nothing really alarming, I assure you. This is often impressive!
- The sound he has restored explosive VO DTS HD 5.1 which provides an unprecedented scale to the beautiful music of the film and various "impressive" sound effects of the film (the chain explosion of atomic bombs in the heart of the core, to shake walls!). Exceptional!
- Bonus: absolutely nothing. Not even a trailer. Disappointing. Especially since the dvd was full, so keep it.
The HD is not even out yet in the United States or even announced yet, amazing!? European exclusive!
In short, this edition remains a safe and secure shopping for all fans who want to have the best picture and the best sound available for this movie.
See for yourself.

Journey to nearly the centre of the Earth
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 2, 2014Verified Purchase
Released in 2003, the Core is a disaster movie. Which sees strange events happening round the world. Which are swiftly discovered to be the result of problems with the Earth's inner core. It's no longer rotating. Which is destroying the Earth's electromagnetic field.
And without that, life on Earth will be gone within months thanks to solar radiation. Among other things.
This we find out about via hotshot scientist Dr. Josh Keyes [Aaron Eckhart], extremely smart and extremely arrogant Dr. Conrad Zimsky [Stanley Tucci], talented pilot Beck [Hilary Swank], and military man Gen. Thomas Purcell [Richard Jenkins].
Getting the core to rotate again is seemingly impossible. Given that nobody has ever drilled more than seven miles into the Earth. And the conditions and the pressure wouldn't support human life. But an old colleague of Zimsky's might just have the answer.
An incredible mission, with very high stakes, is on...
This is not a movie you will enjoy if you want scientific accuracy first and foremost, so you have to just treat it as a piece of escapism. It tries to hark back to disaster movies of old, and films such as fantastic voyage as well. The latter in that we have a group of very smart characters who have to come together, learn how to work together, and what to do when things don't go according to plan.
The main cast are all very good. There is some humour arising from character interaction. And it follows a usual pattern of set up, introduce characters, introduce method of saving the day, train, set off, and deal with what comes next.
Everything before the latter passes nicely but then it does take a while for the mission sections to really get going. Since the only jeopardy can come from natural phenomenon and since some characters have made more of an impression than others by then, it takes a bit to click.
But click it does, as things go wrong and the stakes get ever higher. There is an interesting theme of people who have never failed having to learn how to, which it doesn't touch on quite as much as it could. And if you've seen a certain South Park episode, you will know what happens to at least one character.
But it does what it needs to, keeping the thing going and leaving you wondering who will make it. All of which makes for a perfectly paced and decent conclusion.
A movie of pure escapism and spectacle, but with some decent performances and characters as well. For that, it's a fun watch.
The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:
Languages: English, Czech.
Subtitles: English, Arabic, Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, Polish, Romanian, Swedish, Turkish.
Extras are: A commentary from the director.
A making of documentary. Which is one of those promotional pieces that doesn't show much of the production just those involved enthusing about it. It runs for ten minutes.
Five features about how certain visual effects moments were done. These run from three to five minutes each.
Fourteen minutes of deleted/extended scenes. Which can only be watched all in a row rather than individually. And with or without a directors commentary on why they were cut. A lot of these are character moments that were lost for time and pacing reasons, and some are pretty good. Especially the very first. So they're worth a watch.

IT’S A HOT ADVENTURE!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 1, 2018Verified Purchase
As a sort of ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’ for the 21st century this film succeeds on many levels, not least the script which only has a few cringe-making moments! An excellent cast cope ably with some breathtaking and physically demanding scenes...
Altogether a thrilling ride....
I enjoyed it immensely, other reviewers maybe more technically nit-picking but it is after all entertainment, and should be viewed as such.
Good value-for-money.

Why I Love Three Star Movies.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 12, 2014Verified Purchase
I like this film, on Amazon's scoring system that means I should give it four but I can't because it will always be a three star movie. I love three star movies. To quote Tom Waits they are 'the heart of Saturday night'. Big screen, loud noises, rousing score, explosions, corny dialogue, belief not so much suspended as catapulted into orbit. In fact everything that sets movies apart from theatre. Except this one has the cheek to get some very actorly actors in, and a director who understands the English language, or at least doesn't bear it a grudge. Enjoy yourself, and for those of you averse to guilty pleasures, let yourself go, and tell yourself the script is amazing (it's not but it's way better than usual for an FX-fest). Great fun.

First Rate Disaster Movie

The Earth's electromagnetic field is crumbling, a top secret U.S govt project may or may not be responsible and it falls to a ragbag group of scientists led by Aaron Eckhart and Stanley Tucci to journey to the centre of the planet and kickstart it back into life by detonating five nuclear devices.
Directed by Jon Amiel(The Singing Detective)this is top notch entertainment with a sharp sense of humour, colourful characters, pretty good special effects(the bird attack in Trafalgar Square is nicely judged) and a strong and believable emotional bond between the main players.
Some people seem hard to please, the science while being outlandish is played out persuasively by an excellent cast and of it's type this movie does everything it sets out to do and more.
Highly Recommended.
