It's been 5 years since I upgraded... so I was set to spend a couple of grand to upgrade my Adobe CSS suite, but Adobe's change to a subscription model made me rethink.
The Corel does pretty much everything I used on the Adobe products... a couple of things a little different... a feature or 2 missing here, but also a cool feature here and there added that Adobe didn't have. And the transition wasn't difficult at all. It's got a couple of bugs that aren't hard to get around... but then again so did my CSS.
At $300 for Corel, I figure I will save around $3,000. And, because I own it, I won't t have to worry about not having the tools I need if, in the future, I hit a time when I need to tighten my belt financially. Also, I hate the idea that at some time during the subscription some Adobe product manager might decide to change the interface for the hell of it ... making me have to learn how to do things again - on their schedule.
Every company seems to want to take a piece of the monthly pay check. Well this time, with me, it didn't work out for Adobe... and it worked out great for me. Same product, great quality, easier interface - much less price.
Great software *IF* you're not on Windows 10. This ran with absolutely no glitches on 7 - never had any issues seen on Corel's forums. Highly recommended! I came from using Xara for close to 16 years now and needed more capabilities.
2 STARS FOR WINDOWS 10
I did a clean (read free!) install of Windows 10 and it's now as unstable as any other Microsoft software. The Object manager freezes frequently requiring adding a new layer to restart it. Otherwise you can't select or manipulate it in any way. The Font databases go corrupt and require deleting. Intensive processes like contours for complex objects crash it.
I like Win 10 - most of my software runs GREAT. Corel, however, DOES NOT. if it's critical to you that it runs flawlessly, stay on 7.
But, bought CGSx7. There were default set up problems from the start. No matter how CGSx7 Photo-Paint was entered as default for jpegs, they opened only with Windows Photo Viewer. After multiple emails to and adjustments suggested by Corel techs, no solution.
As usual, Microsoft techs dumped problem on me, saying corrupted files left over from pre-install of Win 7 Pro. Checked all that before install. None there. Also said possible virus. Deep scan said that not happening.
Almost every online forum discussed same problem, again no solution.
However, online comments also noted no problem with CGSx6, especially for CGSx7 users who had problems and reverted to that earlier version. That indicates to me that Corel made at least one change between CGSx6 and x7 and this problem is the result. Getting them to produce a fix or even suggest they might have caused the problem goes against the software industries' deeply ingrained philosophy - "our product is faultless. Any problems come from the user."
And, of course, that is not the only problem with the app, but it is the deal breaker.
So, its back to CGS12 for me and good luck to any Win 7 pro user who goes for CGSx7.
Since then I have tried the more expensive products from Adobe and I have kept gravitating back to CorelDraw. I like how familiar they have kept the interface while upgrading the many features and now it is packed with tons of features that I feel rivals Adobe. When I upgraded my laptop recently I had to upgrade all my software -I chose to go with X7 as it is compatible with windows 8.1.
Coming from version 12 there was a bit of a learning curve as X7 has a more intuitive interface - but once you get used to it, it will become second nature, just give it some time :)
I also am very pleased that compared to other products, it has a more affordable price and still delivers a quality product - CorelDraw Fan!
