What I most enjoyed about this book was the beautiful writing. The author’s prose borders on perfection, and her talent in catching and conveying the flawless pitch of regional tones and accents is remarkable.
This is the story of Eve Stewart, a talented and intelligent woman who is selflessly invested in her family’s well-being, though her ambition and larger worldview compel her to expand her horizons, which she does with admirable determination.
But the ties that bind her to her family and the people of Florida’s Ocklawaha River region test her independence and her mettle. In Eve we meet a worthy heroine who defies not only a woman’s place in a conventional man’s world, but the constructs of a myopic world that dictates who a person can love. In that regard, the author delves into the subject of prejudice with deft writing that gently but astutely prods our conscience.
Ms. Devos did a formidable amount of research in regard to the history of the area in which the story is set, and into the characterization of the people who lived there. That research lent authenticity, flavor and color to the captivating story.
This is a book that I will read again because it touched me in so many ways. I look forward to reading any and all of this truly talented author’s books.
