Compelling thriller perfect for a lazy summer afternoon

Army intelligence officer Amy Cornwall comes home from work one day to find her husband and young daughter kidnapped. She is instructed to perform a mission- capture an individual being held in Texas and deliver him to Florida or she will never see her family again. So begins this tense thriller as we are immediately thrown into the mission. The plot does not let up until the confrontation at the end.
In typical James Patterson fashion, the plot is relentlessly compelling. Chapters are short and often end on a cliffhanger making the book impossible to put down but a length that can be read in one to two sittings. Characters are, overall, stock figures and the emphasis is on plot progression and pacing vs a deep character study so this can be overlooked. The bottom line is this is a very entertaining book and perfect for a lazy summer afternoon.

This suspenseful tale was better than a lot of James Patterson’s stories. Certainly, I found nothing that stood out in a negative way. I think one reason it was such a good page turner was the point of view.

POV: First person from the view of the heroine, a wife and mother who is one of the first female Army Rangers.

BLUSH FACTOR: with just a single eff word (page 41), I think this could be a story for any audience. Perhaps PG-13 for many, but, frankly, the language is pretty typical of that heard spoken throughout our society. At any rate, I would feel comfortable reading it to anybody.

AUTHENTICITY: Yes, to my ears it comes across as believable.

BOTTOM LINE

Four stars out of five. I enjoyed reading it and expect it to, someday, become a major motion picture.

I guess I'll have to stay with the mundane words like page turner, breathtaking, plot twisting, and those traits you've read about his other books. Wonderful reading with never a dull moment.

Looks like JP finally wrote a truly good book - like he used to write - it grabbed you from Page 1, it was a page-turner, you could not put it down, the characters were well-developed, and it was a thriller with some nice twists and turns.

Note to JP - Reagan Airport in Washington, DC is NOT Reagan International Airport - it is Reagan National Airport - it does not handle international flights, only domestic flights within the US - everyone knows that - you need better editing or proofreading. Also, on Page 244, Vasquez is in Texas, she needs to go to Florida to track down Captain Cornwall - yet she is ordered to drive WEST - the last time I check a map of the US, Florida was EAST of Texas and I don't believe it has moved - again, very poor editing/proofreading.

I liked this book because it had a lot of action and even though it wasn't to hard for the reader to figure out the reasons for what is going on it leaves enough for us the try to figure out and still enjoy thing as they are revealed. I don't like to say to much about the actual story in case I accidently spoil something. After I was so disappointed in the last Patterson book I was glad to read this one and once again love his book.

I understood the plot and the ending, but I never figured out why this woman's family was kidnaped so that she would be forced to rescue some guy wanted by the drug cartel? There must have been many much easier ways to go about this. One is that the guys holding the person would have released him to Mr. Cornwall. Why not let him go get the guy?

Fantastic story with twists and turns. Not knowing who she can trust and with betrayal coming from unexpected quarters Amy tries to rescue her family from dangerous kidnappers. They have set her an almost impossible task of driving half way across the country - rescue another kidnapped victim, who is guarded by heavily armed men - bring this person to a rendezvous point and swap this person for her family. She's a highly trained Army officer, one of the few females to qualify as a Ranger, what could possibly go wrong? In short, pretty much everything.

Really enjoyable, fast paced story. Well worth a read.

Is she credible, not really.....who can drive 13 hours, twice in 2 days and still shoot em up. Oh, did i mention she kills 3 people and doesn't get a slap on the wrist, let alone prosecuted !!!! Good read though!!!

I loved the characters and the plot, which were easy to follow too as really good descriptions help the reader to identify each one and follow them throughout the book.
