Edit, I took off the 2 red plastic pieces by the cutters, I guess this is their "Cut and Hold" feature. I think it was acting as a limiter because, after removing them I was able to cut bigger pieces and the cutting action felt more firm. It still struggled to cut 1/2" branches and didn't force it because of the plastic handles. Upgrading from 3 to 4 stars.
Technically, one should try and pull these brambles out, removing the roots so they won't return, but that is virtually impossible as there is a well established massive underground root system. The best alternative I have found is to remove them by clipping them close to the ground when you notice them, and this tool is almost perfect for the job. If the cutting shears were angled with respect to the shaft it would be absolutely perfect, but it still works very well. The shears are oriented in-line with the shaft, but do swivel 90 degrees so they can be oriented horizontally or vertically (or anywhere in-between) with respect to the handle.
This is definitely a "light duty" tool. The shaft is thin lightweight metal, and the shears would not be able to cut anything too woody (like saplings over 1/4"). However, I am able to easily cut the usually softer brambles even up to about 1/2" in diameter. I can cut the ones that are growing straight up by angling the tool toward the ground and turning the cutting shears horizontally. Alternately, many brambles grow more horizontally, creeping across the ground - these can be cut even more easily with the cutting shears in the vertical orientation.
Finally, the gripping functionality is excellent. Once I have cut a bramble I can then easily toss it off into the woods away from the path without having to pick it up or touch it at all.
[ED: The handle that pulls the mechanism is plastic - pulling steel cable - it broke after a couple of weeks of use. One side of the part is weaker to have a slot to install the cable through; that side broke. The slot's position and the shape of the part could be improved. Ideally that area should be steel.]
Not only can you reach up, but (obviously) down and away; and you can stick it into places you couldn't stick your hand and tool and arm; and (if you want) you can take the cut bit back out.
[ED: I will use the replacement Amazon has kindly provided only for soft stems.]

The convenience afforded by the grabbing feature is also much to be appreciated. Pity that the lopping shears that I use for backing up my pruning, obviously with an eye to using the right tool for the job at hand, doesn't have the capacity to secure a grip on the larger branches that by times require attention.
