In Coronado's Footsteps (April 1984 Arizona Highways Magazine) Paperback – January 1, 1984

5.0 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

Later published in a hardcover commemorative edition and a 1991 paperback reprint, this is the original April 1984 edition of Arizona Highways magazine with text by Stewart Udall, Arizona statesman and former Secretary of the Interior. As editor Don Dedera explains, Udall has made the saga of Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado a lifelong avocation. This is the result of his research and perspective. This 48-page issue, with most of the text written by Udall, is illustrated by artist Bill Ahrendt and photographer Jerry Jacka. Ahrendt paints and sketches the scenes described in accounts of Coronado’s travels. Jacka photographs the present-day Coronado trail. Archeologist Emil Haury contributes a 6-page essay on The Search for Chichilticale, an attempt to bridge the gap between prehistory of the Southwest and the recorded history that commenced with Coronado’s arrival.

This entire issue of Arizona Highways is dedicated to Coronado and his explorations in the Southwest. The photography makes it all come to life and is much more interesting than a couple of paragraphs in a dry history book written by somebody who's never been there in the first place.

I needed the information in one article for a research project and no longer had a copy of the magazine at hand.
