The story happens a year on. Leander has grown up quite a bit, he’s more street wise and savvy to the ways of the world. He’s also hungrier than ever to find success as a treasure hunter. The opportunity presents itself when word comes his way (via Ellora who also makes a return) that two rival gangs are in possession of the stolen Coronation Necklace of a former king. Despite being a bit older and wiser, Leander still winds up in a pile of trouble – losing his new friend Valli - and meeting the wrong end of an axe. I won’t say more to avoid spoilers.
Coronation Necklace delivers exactly what we wanted after Flute of the Wind Queen. The modern fantasy sci-fi setting of Nagdecht is explored in more detail, particularly as Leander comes face to face with the darker side of society. Key relationships, especially between Leander and his father, are also explored in more depth which lends itself to a very satisfying read.
The book stands on it’s own very well, and you won't need to read Flute of the Wind Queen to enjoy it, although the adventure is so much better if you do.
I received a free copy for an honest non-reciprocal review.
