About the Author
Lionel Smalley, B.Com., Hons. B.Com. (cum laude), M.Com. (cum laude), D.Com.
Dr. Lionel Smalley is president and CEO of The School of Project Management (SPM). He was formerly an associate professor in the Department of Business Management at the University of South Africa.
After obtaining his high school diploma, Lionel started his career by studying commerce - majoring in business management, economics and statistics. After completing his under-graduate degree, he started his first company - selling men's clothing. After completing his post-graduate degrees, specializing in operations management, he started his second business venture - an event management company.
After starting his doctorate in operations management, his empirical research changed direction. This shifted from operations to project management. He completed his thesis in 1986, entitled "Project Management in South Africa." This was mainly due to the positive influence of Dr. Harold Kerzner, an international expert in project management.
In September 1982, Lionel persuaded Dr. Harold Kerzner to visit South Africa to conduct two project management seminar/workshops. Following his first visit Harold returned fifteen times over a twelve-year period. During this time he conducted 86 seminar/workshops.
Since 1987, Lionel has been involved with project management training and consulting. In March 1989 he started his training company, The School of Project Management (SPM).
