What I liked:
1. I liked the main characters and the overall theme of the story--that things aren't always as they seem.
2. I love enemies to lovers stories.
What I didn't like:
1. How could four 19 year olds honestly return to a high school town and think it's cool to party with high schoolers? Especially ones with absolutely NO parental boundaries? It makes no sense! 19 year old boys do not come back from college on a Halloween weekend and take only of-age girls to a party and have an oragie in catacombs of an old church. It's absolutely ridiculous and not plausible, unless you are the lamest 19 year olds playing basketball in college
2. Other than the ridiculous premise, I find it hard to believe that three years go by and all three boys who were arrested are released and have been planning to have revenge on a girl who "got them arrested". Especially when one of them was arrested for rape.
3. What revenge includes burning down the poor girl's childhood home, making her mother "disappear", and then basically gang raping her, which "wouldn't really be rape if they force her to beg for it first." Corrupt isn't the word I would use. They then say the fire wasn't supposed to happen, but it's okay because Rika (the main character) says she didn't like the house anyway, so no hard feelings. And then we find out Rika's mother disappears for two months with no contact with Rika because she's in...*drumroll*...rehab! Which is a great thing because Michael (the main male) always loved Rika despite this three year plan of "ending her life", so even though he's been a violent and terrible person, we should all have known better than to think he would have actually killed her mother. And Rika being scared for her mother was just juvenile and offensive (ummm no--it's not).
4. Forcing someone to beg for sex from four men is still rape in my book. Although it never happened completely, the four guys should not have been surprised that she fought back and stabbed one of them. Although, they deemed her a b**** for that.
5. The girl on girl action, and the later threesome were so unnecessary and bent boundaries for stupid reasons. It wasn't like any of these boundaries in this story actually furthered any way of thinking. It was all done as a way of getting back at each other. Just completely childish during adult moments! And Michael willingly lets Rika and Kai have sex and even hands Kai a condom while one of them takes her from the front and the other from behind! All to give Kai confidence again!! Wtf?!
I seriously woke my husband up every ten minutes to tell him the next absurd thing that happened in the story. It was so bizarre.
Save your money and time. Read Bully if you really want a good Penelope Douglas novel. It was more mature and less convoluted.
Love this author ,but i’m starting to dislike how the guys always bully the girls .
I don’t understand why .
This book is sick.
Those guys are criminals, they should all be in jail.
Michael,o my God,he didn’t care if he liked her,he was going to destroy her, take all her money, let all of them rape her, they burned down her house,They most likely kidnaped her,was go to sexually abuse her ,and hours later she just sleep with him.
Till last minute he was going to destroy her .
And i was think on a 3 star till the moment she had a threesome with 2 of them. That was not a turn on.That was discussing,repulsive,1 minute after she confesses her love she opens her legs for another guy.
They were ,terrorists ,criminal,gang,rapist .
They all should be in jail.THIS book
I love this author ,i will say ,i read all her books ,but this one should be taked out of the market .
Top international reviews
This book for all its intents and purposes not only satisfied my craving for something new, but it knocked it right out of the park and left me wanting more - not just from these intriguing, complicated characters but from Penelope Douglas because damn, this woman can write!
There were moments in this story when I didn’t think our heroine would actually survive, I was absolutely terrified for her. This is no easy romance, and from what I could tell in the earlier chapters, I was setting myself up for a dark capture story, yet the way the scenes flitter between past and present POV narrative starts to paint a very different picture, loving the fact that I had no idea what direction it would eventually go.
Some readers get frustrated with past and present tense as it can become a little complicated keeping up with the separate time frames, especially if you stop reading halfway through a chapter, but all I can say here is that it worked so well!
This story focuses on first love with the one you can’t have. A tale of rich kids who have it all, but are left bereft from loss or impossible parental aspirations that take the talented, rich and untouchable to dabble wholeheartedly in the adrenaline rush of rebellion. One Burns Night three years ago, friends Michael, Kai, Damon and Will take their pranks to a whole new level, and when they invite Erika ‘Rika’ Fane, the downtrodden girlfriend of Trevor Crist, Michael’s golden boy younger brother, things start to take a precarious turn.
What was supposed to be some harmless fun turns nightmare when a prank goes too far and there are serious repercussions as Michael says goodbye to Kai, Will and Damon as they are carted off to Prison. Three years they were incarcerated. Three years, Michael and his friends have been plotting their revenge and now the time has come to make good on those plans. Rika, now at college, alone, away from the security of Thunder Bay, has no idea that she’s about to become a key part of a sick and twisted game of cat and mouse, as everything she holds dear is about to be destroyed…
Complication comes in the way of Rika loving Michael since she can remember. Trevor was always a friend, one that promised a comfortable home and a loving heart but she was never content with just kissing her friend, she loves the danger, the monster that resides in the penthouse above her new apartment. She’s alone, not a threat but he looks at her like she’s the enemy, so why does she want nothing more than for him to see her? She never forgot his words he whispered to her that night three years ago as she let herself be free for those few hours; ‘own who you are.’ Yes, she wanted to own herself, own her actions, be the person she wants to be, and her heart is telling her that Michael should be a part of that... sleeping with the enemy can only go one way, and Rika is about to find out the hard way.
Corrupt had me literally hanging off my reading chair by the thread of my pants. This book touched on every conceivable emotion including fear. What I loved most though was the anticipation of what happens next. The sexual tension is electrifying and yes, the sex is fabulous with one steam room scene in particular that I just cannot seem to get out of my head, and trust me… I don’t actually want to.
I could scream about this book from the rooftops because I loved it that much, alas I will just implore you to read it. You can Corrupt me any time Penelope Douglas!
5 ‘Own who you are’ Crowns
Seriously love it!
Wow! I don't even know where to start. I finished this yesterday, and I am still trying to figure out how to write something that makes sense! I keep deleting everything I write, because I don't think anything I say will be able to put into context, just how much I have loved this book.
Penelope Douglas pushes her characters to the absolute maximum, and just for fun, she pushes them a little but further.
Rika (Erika) is treated like a delicate child. She is protected by those around her at all times. She is constantly being held back and she needs to be free. Rika steps out on her own one night and stands up for herself, showing just how much people have underestimated her. This is the first time she has shown her inner strength and it does not go unnoticed.
Michael is always indifferent around Rika, like she doesn't exist.
Throughout the story we are taken back to a particular day, three years earlier. This is a day that had a huge impact on Rika, Michael and his friends. It is that day, that lays the foundation for the current events. Reading from both Michael and Rika's point of view and also switching between present day and three years earlier, kept the suspense building nicely.
Along with the suspense angle, there is also the 'will they, won't they' between Rika and Michael.
There is honestly so much more that I could say about this book. But honestly, if like me, you have held off reading it, I suggest you rectify that soon. I don't think you will regret it.
This is one of those books that is going on my top reads for this year.
So why the four stars, I simply wanted more, it was too short.
This is the story of Erika Fane, heiress to a jewellery fortune and a woman who has been in love with Michael Crist for as long as she can remember. Michael who treats her with disdain and contempt but for reasons she cannot fathom.
In the present nineteen year old Rika has decided she wants to stand on her own two feet away from the safety of her family. What she doesn't realise is, that she is moving towards a culmination of three years of planning and revenge that will push her to her limits in ways she never imagined.
"Run all you want, Little Monster, We're faster."
We are sent back to the past, three years prior to when she was only a sixteen year old girl, trying to work out where she fit in the world, and to the night she spent with the enigmatic 'Four Horsemen' who ruled their small town with the power of their rich families behind them and the prestige of being star high school jocks, that were now at college and back for 'Devils night' to cause a little havoc.
We slowly find out why she was so hated by the one person she felt safe with.
As you may have gathered from my past reviews, I just love it when the hero hates his heroine, but what I loved most about this one, is the way he hated on her - playing mind games, scaring her, pushing her to her limits and ultimately, pushing her so far that she was able to stand up for herself and become a strong woman who knew who she really was. He helped Rika become the woman she was without even knowing it.
I really admire Penelope Douglas for writing this story, it was so glaringly obvious that it was written from the heart, and her diversity from writing New Adult, Contemporary Romance, and now Erotica, is what makes her one of my top favourite authors that I will read anything that she has written the moment I can get my hands on it.
There was something quite wrong about a bunch of rich kids playing games with a girl, a sixteen year old one at that, but stories like these are like a drug to me and I can't get enough. I thought it was so unique and clever and even though 'The Four Horsemen' were quite often sadistic in their words and actions towards Rika, I lapped it up like a junkie.
All in all, this book had my name written all over it and whilst I can understand it's not every bodies cup of tea, I for one though it was flipping fantastic.
Corrupt is an Erotic Romance, told in dual POV, past & present.
This was an all consuming read, I was utterly enthralled from start to finish. This book blew my freaking mind. I'm not sure even sure what to write apart from BUY.THIS.BOOK.
I don't think I have read anything as adrenalin pumping, edge of my seat, action packed in a while. The story just kept on giving. It had me hook, line and sinker corrupted!
Told through dual narrative switching between past and present. Ms Douglas has executed a 5 +++ star read, just when I thought I had it all figured out BANG there would be another plot twist that I did not see coming.
Without doubt one of my favourite reads this year. I loved every part of it!
Would highly recommend to readers who enjoy an original, gripping read.
I found myself going through an array of emotions and felt the words come alive as the story delivered; fear, mind games, love/hate, vengeance, gaining the upper hand, chemistry, angst, hot steamy erotic scenes, longing, trust, right and wrong, pushing boundaries, testing new waters, revenge, freedom and real love.
I absolutely loved Rika and Michael they were such a hot sexy couple and I couldn’t get enough of their scenes. Michael is devious, patient and dangerous and what he wants he usually gets and that includes little Rika. Rika is the perfect match for him and their chemistry was off the charts. I loved the dynamics between Michael, Kai, Will and Damon. These guys were so bad but I couldn’t stop loving them and I cannot wait for Kai, Will and Damon’s books.
My five stars were held back as I needed more grovelling from Michael for Rika, and I didn’t like the direction the story went with Trevor at the end.
As for Rika, I loved her character . You can see her evolving within the pages and it's done marvellously . She's somewhat as twisted as Michael and gives it back well . She's strong and best of all , she's vwr aware of her feelings for a Michael . No second guessing her actions or motives .
The rest of the characters - Kai, Will and even Damon are strongly formed and each leave it's mark individual . I hope there are books devoted to them as I would love to hear more from the Horsemen !
The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because I didn’t like how Rika forgave the boys so quickly (I won’t say what she forgave because it will ruin the book) if I was her I’d have him begging me for forgiveness and making him suffer.. she forgot it all after an hour! I was bit disappointed with that and the fact she was supposed to be so strong and Independant , yet she wielded to him at any moment.
Other then that I loved it! Lol
That being said, I like the writers style, they way you were kept guessing.
But I only finished this for the sake of finishing it in hope that something real would happen in the relationship (it doesn't)
Also the steam room scene was just the least erotic thing I've ever read...
This is a real crude, cathartic, and extremely chilling story.
If you love straightforward plots and traditional happy endings you are best advised to avoid this book, you have been warned. However if you like twisted, dark, crude, honest and fast paced tales, then you must download this and get ready for a wild ride!
I didn't read any of the reviews before I read this book as I knew by the blurb it was going to be different, so I didn't want anything clouding my judgement or giving me a glimpse into what I was about to read.
I'm not keen on writing spoilers and it would present a very hard test for me to write a detailed review without giving things away.
All I have to say is, You can't escape your fate, misunderstandings can be extremely dangerous, and regardless of what a person throws at you, if you love them with every fibre of your being, nothing will ever change that, on the contrary it will become a stronger feeling and something that will give you purpose.
Each character in this book was brilliantly written and I look at the prospect of reading more about each one. The leads where fantastic and each paragraph and chapter where they interacted was more explosive each time which certainly built the momentum and the tension urging you on and keeping you interested. Loved having the story from both POV's.
Movies like The Hole, The Covenant, The Count Of Monte Cristo, all have thought us what people do when seeking revenge, it eats at your soul and hinders your ability to see beyond the hate. I found this book residing in a grey area between a psychological thriller, a romantic drama or a straight-ahead dark romantic suspense; I veer to the latter and I thank the Author for making it a standalone one.
So, can I convince you and corrupt you into giving this book a chance? I can assure you won't be disappointed.
5 NAIL BITTING STARS! Isalovesbooks
Erika aka Rika Fane has spent all her life growing up next door and with the Crist family. Her father died when she was 13 and her mother became an alcoholic. Rika and Trevor are great friends but it’s Trevor’s older brother, Michael, who has always caught her eye, and churns up feelings, good and bad, within her. She’s been desperate all her life for him to notice her, or treat her with anything other than disdain, when he does.
Michael Crist is one of the Four Horsemen. A golden child of Thunder Bay, he and his friends are virtually untouchable. Until, one Halloween, evidence of their antics are used against them, and his three friends, Kai, Damon and Will, end up serving time.
They believe that Rika betrayed them. When they are released from prison, they’re out for revenge. They plan to isolate her, use her, ruin her. Their retribution is completely diabolical.
Told in dual POV and shifting between the present and past, this novel was edgy, dark, intense and deliciously compelling. I loved reading every single word. The author has always been big on sex scenes but this novel is the hottest one yet! Full of seething emotion and desire, cruelty and hatred and, underneath it all, a burning need on both Rika and Michael’s parts for their souls to be free and truly seen.
The book ends with a few questions and untold stories about the other key characters that I hope the author will write.
It was a brilliant read and I’m so jealous of all those readers who get to read it for the first time!
