I want to start my review by saying I have read all of Penelope's books, and enjoyed them all. This review are just my opinions. I completely get that Penelope has a million hard core fans, because I am a fan of hers as well. So if you don't agree with my review, that's cool with me. Differing opinions is what makes for great discussions!

After Chapter One I had suspected Trevor was the cause for whatever problem had occurred. His deep hatred for Michael was very apparent. By Chapter 6 - after reading about Trevor's phone call to Rika I knew I was right. As I continued reading all that kept going through my mind was that I had read a similar story. Oh yes! It was Bully! What are the similarities? Michael and Jared both had a disapproving/bully of a father, and a mother that was there but not present in their childs life. Tate/Rika both suffered from the death of a parent, and other parent not being around at all - basically leaving them both to deal with things and life on their own. Tate/Rika both were scaredy cats, not quite capturing the attention of the male bully until they started to "fight back". Jared/Tate/Michael/Rika - both next door neighbors, the men in both books doing obscenely terrible things to the girls in both books - and BAM! the men kinda 'apologize' to both girls, the girls throwing themselves at the men and then they have sex. All is forgiven! I can not wrap my head around this at all. This isn't a case of a boy pulling the girls hair on the play ground that he secretly likes, this is a case of MY HOUSE WAS BURNED DOWN!! My match books from my dad are destroyed! But hey - you're going to rebuild my house with your own money. I mean it! Otherwise I'm going to stomp my foot!

I really didn't enjoy this book but I read the whole thing because I paid money for it. First thing that stands out is how often the same phrases get used ad-nauseam throughout the entire book ''pinching eyebrows together'' ''fisting'' of hair. Is there something wrong with using the word frown to describe a frown? and can they not grab each others hair sometimes instead of always fisting it? This is like an 80's movie where the cool guys are all tall, good looking, well hung and everyone is in awe of them, they walk into a bar and all the mere mortals scatter like flies to give them the best table. The biggest mystery of the book is why Rika would want an emotionally retarded guy who sleeps around. It had all the makings of a really good novel, the start was great and I was hooked at the beginning - but it rapidly fell flat after that. I can see from all the 5 star reviews that the majority of people have loved this book but I found the characters too shallow and one dimensional, I didn't like any of them.

No, just no. Up until this book I didn't think penelope Douglas could do wrong. This book is well written because she is a good writer but the plot jumps all over the place. ********spoiler alert********** the threesome. Really? Made no freaking sense. I'm sure people will like it because it's 'different' but it just wasn't for me.

4.5 stars. This book is whoa! This is nothing like Penelope Douglas' Falling Away series so if that's what you are hoping for, then no. As a dark romance, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, in complete anticipation of what was going to happen next. There's a lot of pushing of the envelope by the characters and I was in constant suspense of wondering just how far they would go every time. To say that reading this was addictive, gripping and heart pounding is an understatement. At the same time, I don't think this book is for everyone.

If you want the sweetness, words or epic groveling gestures of a conventional romance, then absolutely look somewhere else, because you won't find it here. Erika Fane is trying to start over with her life. She grew up in the confines of a sheltered upbringing, full of privilege, but she isn't conceited or pampered. She's always had an eye on her friend/boyfriend Trevor's older brother, Michael Crist. Their families are close friends so they all grew up around one another. Michael is more of an anti-hero than a hero. Even though Erika has never escaped his notice, he's far from nice or polite to her. Three years ago, Erika, Michael and Michael's 3 best friends hung out together for an evening of pranks, shenanigans and debauchery. Then the following day, Michael's 3 best friends went to jail and now they are all out again. They have one united goal, and with Michael's participation and manipulation, they are going to take Erika down and break her completely for her betrayal.

The story is not predictable. The writing is fantastic. Erika herself is a great heroine. She's grown up as the overall good girl, but she wants to break out of her shell and not be so good all of the time.

Corrupt is a story about Michael and Rika, and a misunderstanding that was allowed to fester till it consumed four of the characters in the book. It is a story of love, revenge and whatever Trevor's character was about.
This book would have been a decent read, but I am giving it two stars because a few things did not work for me. First of all, the story itself was unbelievable in some places especially the part where the father handed control of a huge trust to his irresponsible professional athlete son to manage. Who does that? And how is that even possible? I do not want to give spoilers but any real person(other than Rika) would have called the cops on Michael and his friends for some of the things they tried to do to her. It also felt like the writer wanted us to have a love/hate relationship with the character Michael, I would say that it worked, because I could not stand him by the end of the book. The heroine was beyond ridiculous, and so it evened out, and by the time I was done I felt that it was probably for the best that she was with him.
I do not really understand the need that writers have these days to push boundaries. I wish I could unread some scenes in this book, it did not add to the story and just made me feel dirty for having read it, and just somewhat uncomfortable that the writer felt she needed to add that level of smut to spice up a book. It would have been a decent read without it. It definitely took one star away from my review.
Oh! By the way did I mention the almost sexual abuse/statutory rape casually thrown in, glossed over and in a case of almost being abused by 4 men it was forgiven like it was nothing.
