From the Manufacturer
The Vengeance 1300 Gaming Headset: intense, immersive sound for gamers who care about audio
The Vengeance 1300's large diameter, extra-deep memory foam earpads are designed for comfort.
Vengeance 1300: Your sound card meets its match
If you have a high-end sound card, the Vengeance 1300 will do it justice. If your audio card has CMSS™-3D or a similar 3D audio system, you’ll hear the subtle midband positional cues that you need to enjoy accurate 3D audio and play your best. Is your enemy behind you and to the left, or to the right? Are they behind a wall, or do they have you in their crosshairs? Gaming sound designers work hard to make audio sound great, and your high-end sound card and Vengeance 1300 are a great combination for making that happen.
The results of obsessive audio engineering
Amazing sound
The massive 50mm drivers greatly reduce the overloading and distortion that can occur with gaming headsets that use 40mm drivers. You get more accurate sound reproduction (particularly for the all-important low-frequency effects). You hear more audio, more cleanly, and you get a competitive advantage.
The Vengeance 1300's extra-large inline volume and microphone controller is easy to grab without taking your eyes off the actionSuperior Comfort
The extra-wide, extra deep earcups don’t just help things sound great — they feel better, too. The memory foam earpads with synthetic leather covers provide a comfortable, reliable fit that conforms to the shape of your head without binding or pinching.
Intense, Immersive Gaming
The circumaural, closed-back design blocks distracting sounds and keeps your head in the game, and the extra-large inline volume and microphone control is easy to grab and use when the action heats up — you don't need to take your eyes off the screen. Whether you’re barking instructions to your teammates or chatting with old friends, you deserve to be heard. The unidirectional, noise-cancelling microphone is tuned to capture your voice loudly and clearly, while screening out distracting background noises. And, it flips out of sight when you’re not using it.
Corsair audio: a sound philosophy
Corsair audio: comfort, fidelity, and playing to win
At Corsair, we believe that you need more than just dramatic audio. You need the comfort that allows you to play or talk for hours without thinking about what’s on your head. You need fidelity that gives you a listening experience that’s not just immersive — it must also be true to the source material. And, of course, you need the detailed positioning and situational awareness that lets you play your best.

The articulation on the ear cups is a little odd. They will swing forward to almost flat but do not articular backwards barely at all. They seem comfortable on my head so there are no complaints about it. Just something I noticed.
As for the sound, I can tell that most people complaining about this have probably had audio experiences in the past where they simply plug a headset in and it works and sounds fine. When you throw some 50mm speakers in there, things get a little complicated because you need some juice from your audio source to get the things moving. I am using a Creative X-Fi Go! USB soundcard and I was able to achieve pretty good results. At first, I will admit, they sounded hollow and lacking in bass. However, with about 10 minutes fiddling with the equalizer software, I was able to achieve just as good sound quality as my JVC monitor headphones which are a nice set of headphones for music and movies. The point is this - don't expect plug and play. You will have to mess around a bit with these and I would highly suggest not using these with onboard sound chips. I haven't tried it yet but I would suspect that doing that would create mediocre results. For my part I had to boost the 62, 125, 1K, and 2K Hz levels to get this to have some kick and not have the voices sound hollow. As I am listening to music as I write this, I am noticing a much more precise sound reproduction than I am used to. Less inherent muddy/echo effect in the sound reproduction. I am hearing things in recordings I am very familiar with that I have not noticed before. That is a plus in my book.
My biggest issue with virtually every gaming headset I have owned is that they tend to break in under a year and sometimes within 6 months despite being wellcared for. If Corsair's 1300 holds up with regular use, they will have exceded my expectations in many ways.
In the end, it is so hard to know how to take reviews of audio equipment because it is so subjective and because in the age of MP3s and compressed audio files many people don't even know what "good sound" is any more...
EDIT 11/6/12: After a year of use I can easily say this is the best headset I have ever owned. I have tried Logitech and Plantronics headsets but none hold a candle to this one. After a year the memory foam is holding up like new and they are as comfortable was they ever were. The pleather grew on me quite a bit. I noticed that this material is MUCH easier to clean than cloth cup pads and this has made me a pleather convert. In terms of durability, these are as good as the day I bought them. They hold up really well. Best money I have ever spent on a set of gaming headphones. Heart to Corsair. They are definitely one of the best computer part and component manufacturers in the business.
Update 5/14/2013: After a year and a half of use the hinge for the right earcup finally cracked. It is still hanging together barely and I can use them but soon it will give away completely. This may have been from repeated trauma somehow but I would say that this was typical use. I am not hard on my equipment. That said, this is approximately 3 times the lifespan of my previous headsets. I liked this one so much I will be replacing it with the same product.
Update 3/26/2014: So this may be moot at this point as Corsair has released newer models of this product but I thought I would post it anyway. I got new pair of these after my last update and they performed as expected. I found that if you pull the cups apart from above the rotating joint, then they don't crack at that point. The only complaint I have of this entire series at this point is the boom mic design. The joint on my new pair as started to loosen and their really is no fix for it. It still stays where I put it but it is a little wobbly which is annoying when I have it up and I am moving my head around a lot. I also have started using this with a real soundcard that has a headphone amp and I can tell a big difference. Using these with some amp power behind it is where it really starts to shine.
I've owned quite a few headsets, and most of them clip my ears uncomfortably after wearing them for a while (even the ones with 'large cups'.) This headset, however, has even larger cups and my ears are just fine even wearing them all day. They're so comfortable that I forget they're on.
The sound is really good, although it requires a ton of tuning in the equalizer. For Windows 8, I had to manually extract the software package and put it into Windows 7 compatibility mode because the driver installer is hard-coded to not support Windows 8. Once installed, everything works fine, though.
The microphone is really weak, and I think the only reason it's a problem is that it does not have a microphone boost option in the settings (unlike every other headset I've used). [Edit: this became more annoying the longer I used the headset]
The major downside is that this headset is VERY sensitive to static electricity (and being a cold winter month there is a TON of static in my office right now). It has a metal frame, and every time I pick it up and have even the lightest static discharge, it "disconnects" itself and "reconnects" itself (i.e. it disappears from the USB device list, and rediscovers immediately). This is annoying if you're in a game, because you have to exit the game and reload it to get it to re-detect the headset. Of course, since this is a gaming headset, of course you'll be in a game.
All that being said, this is my favorite headset ever, and I'll be trying to find a solution to the static electricity problem (maybe wrap the metal frame in electrical tape or something). [Edit: I couldn't find a solution to the static problem. And even now that Spring is here, the headset still resets frequently enough that it's unbearable.]
New Review for 1300:
After getting tired of my 1500 resetting from even the slightest hint of a static discharge every time I got up from or sat back down at my desk, I wanted one that wasn't going to have that problem so I went headset hunting again. I've spent around $1k on headsets over the last couple of years, so I've tested quite a few (and the ones I don't like get handed down to the kids or get held as a spare).
The 1300 is NOT as comfortable as the 1500. But it never resets itself due to static, either, thanks to being a 3.5mm connector instead of USB. The thing that makes them not quite as comfortable is the faux leather in the ear cups instead of the other softer non-stick fabric that the 1500 has. It might also be a different material in the ear cup, too, instead of memory foam. I don't know. This is my 2nd most comfortable headset, though, and since I don't get the static discharge reset, they're the ones I'm currently using.
Overall, the setup of the 1300 is MUCH easier. The 1500 requires a ton of tweaking with the included software, and I never felt like I got it perfect. The 1300 uses your existing sound card via a 3.5mm connector, not its own ultra-cheapo USB embedded sound card. Since I have a really good sound card, the sound is a lot better from the 1300 than the 1500, the microphone works a TON better, and it just worked out of the box without any tweaking.
Overall, I like the feel of the 1500 more, by a longshot. But the static discharge reset is overwhelmingly annoying, and the difficulty in getting it tweaked just right is over the top. The 1300 is still comfortable enough, has better sound due to me having a good discrete sound card, and is therefore my current favorite headset.

Here's the problem - I bought these to use with Skyrim. I played Skyrim for hours on end and definitely felt it when I took the headset off, even if I didn't notice it so much while playing but my ears, and I can only really talk about my ears, were pretty sore. Eventually I figured out I needed to adjust the placement of the top band so it rested on my head "just so" to take the pressure off my ears but even then there's quite a lot of sideways pressure as well. Entirely possible my head is a funny shape, but it's average size - certainly not a pumpkin head.
Second problem and again this could be Skyrim specific is that I was unable to adjust the volume using the attached headset control. The volume control is a pair of +/- buttons with a mute button for the microphone. Firstly I'd prefer a slider so I can visually see where the volume is set but secondly it just didn't work in-game. If I alt-tab out of the game it works, but it was a disappointing niggle. (edit: It still won't work with Skyrim, but I can confirm that the headset volume controls works with other games, eg Bastion)
I have a lighter, cheaper, much lower quality USB headset which is far more comfortable to wear - you wouldn't know you had it on - and unfortunately I'm reaching for that for my late night gaming sessions.
The sound quality is OK, I've always found it to be good in gaming, however for music it's not that good it really lacks bass. By lacking I mean non existent which is a bit underwhelming. I recently bought a pair of wireless headphones for out and about for ~£40 and they sound a lot better than these.
I don't use these on a regular basis, I prefer to use my 2.1 speakers instead when I can on my PC. One thing I would say about the ear cups is that they can get pretty hot they aren't very breathable. I've not had this happen that often and it's never really bothered me much.
These outperform the aforementioned HS-800s by a country mile and are very comfortable to boot. While they are a little bulkier the ear pads are very comfortable while being worn and the headset doesn't become uncomfortable during long gaming sessions. The enclosing ear cups block out ambient sound very well allowing me to become immersed far more easily. The build is very sturdy and actually look very good, even if quite larged by comparison.
The sound detailing on games is very rich and I can experience a wider range of sound with these. The different equaliser presets available in software really didn't offer radical change as far as my ears could tell but did help with some of the different requirements of my FPS and MMO game genre favourites. However the standard flat setting was equally good as far as my ears were concerned. I am not sure if that says anything about these headphones or my ears though. I tried the virtual surround which was impressive with the FPS giving real immersion and a sense of location that was sometimes unnerving. The microphone quality is also very good with the noise cancelling capability successfully filtering out a lot of ambient noise. The reproduction of my voice was clear and quite well detailed for the price of this headset
Music was an absolute delight. Warm tones shining through, trebles not too tinny and bass well defined and punchy. Here the equaliser helped tweak the sounds from classical to electronica without swerving too much from the essential baseline. I am suitably impressed.
Watching a DVD or BluRay with these was also very impressive with extremely good detailing in the sound, much more suitable to a higher cost set of headphones such as my Sennheisers. Bass was deep and involving but not overwhelming, mid-range warm and the dialogue clear and audible. There was a little bit of occasional tinny feel to the high frequencies but nothing worth damning this headset for.
All round a very good purchase and I look forward to seeing what Corsair can do with their foray into gaming peripherals if this is anything to go by
Now for sound quality. Just amazing, truely astounding. In 7.1 mode for games the surround effect is fantastic. And they really divide the different sounds apart, not just a general stero sound. Gunfire, explosions, helicopters, footsteps. They can all be picked out seperately even when all going on at once. Amazing Gaming headphones.
Skype- crystal clear mic, no annoying echo of your own voice I had with the soundblasters.
Music and film - Most gaming headsets have a bad review for films and music. Stick these into bypass mode and they again will blow you away.
Corsair have a reputation for good quality gear with excellent build quality.
Plus you get a 2 year Corsair warranty.
Buy these, you will not be dissapointed.
Pros:
*Very clear and detailed sound without going overboard with the bass... I woud describe the audio as being nicely balanced.
*Very comfortable with large ear cups, adjustable headband and memory foam padding.
*Good quality, sturdy construction.
*Works brilliantly with THX Trustudio or Dolby Headphone virtual surround sound modes.
*Strong braided cables for extra durability.
*Easily accessible inline volume and mic mute controls.
*Microphone is loud and clear.
Cons:
*Not very loud if using with onboard audio or a sound card with no amp... It's best to get a USB headphone amp or a sound card with a built in headphone amp (i use the Asus Xonar DG).
Overall i'm more than pleased with my purchase and it's worth every penny (especially while it's still at a reduced price). These are 10 times better than the rubbish 'Alienware TactX' headset i had before (which are rebranded Steelseries 5HV2).
