From the Manufacturer

The 400R has been carefully designed to provide a generous amount of internal volume, and it puts that volume to good use. There’s room for eight PCI-E cards of up to 316mm in length, and even room for a full 240mm radiator for compatibility with the Hydro Series H100 Liquid CPU Cooler and modular watercooling systems. Superior airflow is a requirement for high-performance components that will be regularly pushed to their limits, so the 400R has ten fan mounting points for cooling flexibility. Three 120mm fans — two in the front, and one in the rear — are included, so you’re ready to start building right out of the box.

Overview

Carbide Series 400R

Built for Builders.

The Carbide Series 400R shares vital DNA with the award-winning Corsair Obsidian and Graphite Series. They’re acclaimed for their ease of use and performance-oriented engineering, and this philosophy is abundant in the design of the Carbide Series.

Future-Ready.

Support for USB 3.0 and 2.5” SSDs is built-in. Two USB 3.0 connectors are provided on the front panel and connect directly to motherboards with compatible USB 3.0 headers. Integrated SSD support lets you install 2.5” solid-state drives in any of the hard drive bays, without having to deal with adapters.

Easy access.

Thumb screws on the side panels and tool-free drive installation mean that you’ll spend less quality time with your screwdriver, and the integrated dust filters can be quickly removed for easy maintenance.

Looking good, inside and out.

The beauty on the inside goes beyond the black-painted interior. Corsair’s innovative cable management system provides a straightforward way to route cables behind the motherboard, not across it where it can interfere with airflow and give your system a cluttered look. And since looks are an important part of any build, you’ll appreciate the ability to turn the front panel fan white LEDs on or off with the push of a button.

Corsair makes some of the world's best PC enclosures; just read all the critical acclaim and awards that their Obsidian and Graphite Series cases have garnered. I had the chance to review the Graphite Series White 600T about six months ago, and was impressed with its interior space, cable management, flexible cooling options and Corsair's attention to detail. Despite the impressive performance and features of the Graphite and Obisidian Series cases, there's no question that the premium price kept Corsair's enclosures out of reach for many people--until now.

To complete their offering of high-performance cases, Corsair has introduced the Carbide Series mid-tower case. As their entry-level case, the 400R promises "everything you need, nothing you don't" at an MSRP of $99.99. Let's see if the 400R lives up to that promise.

PROS:
- Plenty of interior space
- Supports up to 10 case fans
- Built-in SSD mounting
- Excellent cable management
- Fantastic value

CONS
- Reset switch too close to fan LED on/off switch

IN THE BOX
* Quick start guide
* USB 3.0 to USB 2.0 adapter
* Zip ties and wire mounts
* Motherboard standoffs
* Motherboard screws
* Hard drive and optical drive screws
* Power supply screws
* Fan screws

AESTHETICS
The exterior of 400R has a very clean and simple design. It doesn't stand out like the Obsidian or Graphite Series cases do, but the simple design will probably appeal to a lot of people. It's also a more typical mid-tower size than the 600T.

At 18.5 lbs, the 400R is almost 10 pounds lighter than the 600T.

It was time to replace an old workstation so I opted to build a new Asus Z77 Sabertooth and wanted a sharp case with lots of room for water cooling (Corsair H100i) and no compromise with respect to cable management, or a solid look and feel, this case delivered!

The case has a very clean feel, well made, firm all around and even has a really simple and nice handle built into the top.

I loaded this case with an Asus Sabertooth loaded with an Intel 3770 water cooled by a Corsair H100i and powered by a Corsair AX850 power supply, everything went together in under 1 hour!

I added in 2 Noctua HF12 fans in the front and 1 on the bottom ahead of the power supply pulling air in, the filter screens in those areas are easy to reach for cleaning and reassemble nicely, not flimsy at all as in some cases. I also added 1 Noctua NF12 on the rear pushing air out and mounted the water cooler on the top with it's 2 fans pushing air out.

The included USB 3.0 hub on the top of the case is a nice feature, however I opted to add an aftermarket AFT PRO-57U media card reader, it needed the 3.0 connector on the motherboard and since there was only 1 I used a 3.0 to 2.0 adapter to install the onboard hub. There is a firewire port on there as well however the Asus doesn't have that option so I used a badge to cover up that port.

The tool-less bays at the top were a snap to work with and overall the case really scored well in my book. I don't build PC's, I used to buy Dell's off the outlet but lately their expandability has left me with no option but to once again become and enthusiast, fortunately cases like this make the build easy!

About the only CON: I would have like to have seen about another inch along the top as it got a little tight once the H100i was installed, that's it though, no other complaints!

For the price I expected a better quality control. The 4 screws on the back of the tower are messed up. I couldn't add my liquid cooler system without exposed the radiator to anything falling on my computer because those plastic joints. If I remove them it left holes too large for the screws. I had to cut the support of one of my fans to be able to add the fan + the radiator on the back.

Most of the general pros and cons have been covered by other reviews, but I'd like to comment on a few specifics:

1.) There is tons of space for cables behind the motherboard tray, which is great for getting them out of sight. However, there's next to nothing on the back of the tray to actually zip-tie cables onto. Most cases that don't advertise cable management as a feature still have plenty of little holes and whatnot that you can use to secure your wires; the back of this tray has nothing, so you'll have to stick adhesive cable clips or something back there if you want to do more than hide your tangle of wires out of sight.
2.) The actual holes for fan screws on the top, sides, and rear of the case are much larger than fan screws; each fan location has four rubber grommets which fit inside of these holes and reduce them to the correct size for fan screws. This is intended to absorb vibrations from the fan and reduce noise; however, since the holes themselves are much larger than the screws it's easy to pull the whole assembly through along with an installed fan, at which point it's really obnoxious to try to get the rubber rings back into place to reattach the fan, particularly in the top/back of the case around a large CPU cooler. Furthermore, they don't work at all with the rubber pull-through connectors that are typically included with high-performance fans nowadays, which is a shame because they're a much less obnoxious solution to the vibration problem.
