The aluminum body looks nice and feels rugged enough for heavy use. The wrist rest does help, though the angle at which I type reduces the usefulness of it, most of the time. The keys have a satisfying weight to them. They also sit above the board, so they are easy to remove and replace. The raised keys give the keyboard a smooth surface which is easier to clean.
Finally, the programmable back-lit keys. Are they necessary? No. But I enjoy them, even if I can't claim they are particularly practical for me. I love the different effects available, and the program is flexible enough for you to do just about anything you could want with them. There is also a healthy online community to inspire or just provide additional templates, if you don't feel like doing it yourself.
I don't have a lot of time for gaming these days, but I am well set, if I am able to get back into it. In the meantime, I am just enjoying trying out different setups and having a keyboard that makes typing a pleasure.
This keyboard is not a necessity by any means. Before this, I used a cheap $13 keyboard from walmart. $180 after tax is a lot to spend on a keyboard, so unless you have the extra money and want something flashy, don't worry about buying this. It will not give you an advantage in gaming, and so far, it doesn't make typing out an essay any faster.
That said, this keyboard is amazing for what it is. It is beautiful.
I give it 5 stars because it is well built, comfortable, has many features, and has a lot of community support (forums, lighting profiles, etc)
As far as the price tag goes, I feel it is fair, but would like to see it priced $30 lower. I understand that all the extra features in this keyboard require a lot more small parts, quality control, etc compared to your average keyboard. I also understand that there isn't a lot of competition as far as keyboards of this caliber go. You are paying the most for the best.
Opening a ticket for an RMA was easy enough, and the reps were helpful. However, this is where the positive experience ended. I shipped my keyboard back to Corsair using their return label, and it arrived a few days later. It has now been a month and a half since they have had my keyboard, and the customer support has been horrible. I've received responses such as the warehouse team "cannot find it, are not available, etc." Each rep tells me they will email me an update that day or the next, and it never happens. They are just kicking the problem down the road each time.
I will never be ordering a Corsair product again, and I strongly urge anyone reading this to look into other manufacturers. Their products may look pretty, and the item may function properly for its estimated lifetime, but if it does have a problem, you might be SOL.
The colors are cool, too. Has some really neat features. That said, the colors also seem to have a mind of their own.
One thing I didn't realize when I bought it is that the key remapping is software based. This means that Corsair is running a virtual keyboard to repeat and remap keys. Because of cheat macros, some games will lock these remaps out. This doesn't hurt me, yet, but it's at least a little obnoxious. Thankfully, the remapping I want to do is permanent, and I can do it using the Windows registry, directly.
No matter what I set individual profiles or settings to, the keyboard switches to plain Blue for the lock screen. I totally get having a non-interactive scheme on the lock-screen, but I don't get why it's blue. I note that the Corsair support boards have many people talking about this, too, with no useful answers. Also, even though I can upload a default profile directly to the keyboard, the keyboard still sometimes reverts to the factory default white with WASD in a red shade. (I'm on Windows 10). All of this only does what I want when I'm logged in interactive and the Corsair program is actively running.
