The world the action is placed in is scary and fascinating at the same time. It is the world of drug cartels, casinos, and crime. It is a world you wouldn’t like to live in, but can’t help imagining how you’d manage if you were thrust in it and you had to survive somehow. The lead character, Corvette Nightfire, is a man who likes to live fast, play poker, and enjoy everything life has to offer. He knows that his lifestyle is not exactly risk-free, but he never expected it to become downright dangerous just because a beautiful woman gave him a heavy bag and shouted some instructions at him in Spanish. He soon understands that her life is in his hands, and he is not sure if he’s able to deal with this horribly twisted situation.
But what I liked most about this book was the fact that it was so much more than your average action thriller. The author focused a lot on the development of his characters, so Corvette is not only running for his life and trying to save the woman he loves, but he’s actually going through a process of self-discovery. This gave the novel depth, and turned it into a touching story that also deals with love, passion, loyalty, and self-doubt.
The author does a great job writing a captivating thriller mixed with a love story. You root for the protagonists while you hope the antagonists have it coming to them! Another aspect that I enjoyed was Corvette starting to embrace his Mexican culture. He grew up speaking English and was more focused on playing poker than living his culture. Once he meets Valentina, all of that changes, he begins to feel a deeper connection to his heritage.
The only aspect of this book that I felt was a bit much was the repetition. At times, when I would be excited at the end of the chapter, wanting to find out what was going to happen, then I was met with someone else's point of view retelling the same scene in his/her eyes, sometimes only moments before. This happened a number of times.
Overall, I enjoyed the read and would recommend this for those who like thrillers and want to read about a strong lead character learning and embracing who he is. A strong 4/5 star rating!
