Having feigned death to escape the hold of the Mafiosi, the story opens as Maria and her lover, Simone, travel to a remote village in the Pyrenees where they plan a new life together. Supposedly, only two other people know Maria is alive, but it’s not long before Maria is drawn-back to a world where a life is a commodity like any other…
Although there are subtle hints that things will change, the early chapters show Maria and Simone as pretty much free to enjoy their idyllic lifestyle. The drama really starts when the fourth chapter takes the story back to Sicily and re-introduces the characters, deceptions and power-struggles that were such a great feature of ‘Cosa Nostra’. From this point onwards the is plot is packed with action, and it steadily builds to a breath-taking climax. If anything, this outing for the Lombardo and Amato clans is even more complex and thrilling than the first.
This was full of characters I loved to loathe, and it’s not simply a case of good versus bad because almost without exception, they’re all equally despicable. Even Maria doesn’t demur at planning a deception she knows will cost the lives of perfectly innocent people if it will get her what she wants. There was (perhaps) one exception though, and that was Madame Verdéaux. She appeared early in the book and didn’t feature a lot, but she’s one of those fleeting characters that nonetheless left a lasting impression, and a hint of mystery too.
Overall: Satisfyingly complex, and very entertaining.

There are several things that I have especially loved about the series. Cosa Nostra is the story of the romance between Maria and Simone. Their love has a mafia family backdrop, with violence and fear, and Maria manages to escape that life. In this second volume, the mafia family violence and fear continues; in fact it will have you back on the edge of your seat. Maria realizes that she is never going to be able to leave the family while Stephano heads up the Amato family. I loved how this realization comes to her.
Maria and Simone find that their love is challenged by their fears for each other and their family links, creating a certain frisson in their relationship.
And, of course, I loved Madame Verdeaux. She is a neighbor in the village in the Pyrenees, smokes, and drinks brandy at any time of the day. The memory that has stayed with me is Madame after a couple of large drinks climbing into her Land Rover, which has no suspension, bobbing along the village streets pulling a trailer overflowing with furniture and disappearing into the distance.
And the romance. The emotions and the angst. It is evident that romance doesn’t always run smoothly, but we see how Maria and Simone come together again despite the obstacles in their way.
I loved it.

This is Emma Nichols at her finest. Cosa Nostra II is quite simply exceptional and without a doubt in my top 10 favourite books of all time.
