Cosby: His Life and Times Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 236 ratings

The first major biography of an American icon, comedian Bill Cosby. Based on extensive research and in-depth interviews with Cosby and more than sixty of his closest friends and associates, it is a frank, fun and fascinating account of his life and historic legacy.

Far from the gentle worlds of his routines or TV shows, Cosby grew up in a Philadelphia housing project, the son of an alcoholic, largely absent father and a loving but overworked mother. With novelistic detail, award winning journalist Mark Whitaker tells the story of how, after dropping out of high school, Cosby turned his life around by joining the Navy, talking his way into college, and seizing his first breaks as a stand-up comedian.

Published on the 30th anniversary of
The Cosby Show, the book reveals the behind-the-scenes story of that groundbreaking sitcom as well as Cosby’s bestselling albums, breakout role on I Spy, and pioneering place in children’s TV. But it also deals with professional setbacks and personal dramas, from an affair that sparked public scandal to the murder of his only son, and the private influence of his wife of fifty years, Camille Cosby.

Whitaker explores the roots of Cosby’s controversial stands on race, as well as “the Cosby effect” that helped pave the way for a black president. For any fan of Bill Cosby’s work, and any student of American television, comedy, or social history,
Cosby: His Life and Times is an essential read.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, September 2014: Woody Allen famously said that only creators of serious works get to “sit at the grown-ups’ table.” Comedians, in his self-loathing view, were childish, lesser, not to be respected. Perhaps one of the greatest achievements of Mark Whitaker’s Cosby is how forcefully it disproves that notion. According to this detailed and generous account, Bill Cosby, for all his goofy faces, physical comedy, and earnest philosophizing, has done more to change cultural attitudes than just about any “serious” actor ever could. Whether at a Greenwich Village club that also showcased Bob Dylan, or on the beloved 1960s TV show, I Spy, or on his wildly successful eponymous sitcom (1984-92), Bill Cosby became what Whitaker calls entertainment’s Jackie Robinson, smashing racial barriers, teaching hard truths to the black community, leading the way. (Comics as diverse as Richard Pryor and Jerry Seinfeld have acknowledged their debt to Cosby.) Whitaker dutifully takes us through Cosby’s life, from his youth in the Philadelphia projects, through his years at Temple University on a track scholarship, to unimaginable financial success and fame, to the tragic death of his only son and the complications of his 50+ year marriage to the elegant and stalwart Camille Cosby. But if some of the less savory parts of his history—the alleged womanizing and perfectionist temper tantrums—are a bit glossed over, the portrait that emerges here is of a guy who has worked tirelessly and earnestly to change the race conversation in this country, one silly bit at a time. – Sara Nelson

A Biographical Cover-Up
Given the negative reviews here, I checked out this book from our public library instead of purchasing it from Amazon. After reading it, I came to the conclusion that others did: PR whitewash. Mark Whitaker was nothing more than a paid shill for the Cosby PR machine. The author wanted Cosby's cooperation, so he made a deal with the devil to get it. The result? A warm and fuzzy portrait of a man that does not exist. There is some discussion of Cosby's extramarital affairs, but leaving out the 2005 rape allegations and the 2006 civil suit/settlement with Andrea Constand is a startling, glaring omission and a biographical cover-up. The author gave a litany of lame excuses for the omission, but the public wasn't buying it.For years the media has given Cosby a free pass over these allegations and Whitaker played the same game instead of providing readers with a hard-hitting, complete and truthful portrait of Cosby. Had he done so, the book would still be in print today. Simon & Schuster has decided to "scuttle" Whitaker's biography, letting it go out of print with no paperback versions or updates planned. It's possible this book might become a collectible, so here's your chance to buy a copy at Amazon. Personally, I will wait for a more comprehensive Cosby biography to come along that does not have the long arm of the Cosby machine and his lawyers suppressing the truth.

This is an excellent and well written biography. It shows the incredible amount of activities that Cosby has done in his career. It also shows his genius and humanity.

The book shows the things that are really important to Dr. Cosby, making the world a better place for all people and bringing much laughter into the world. Nobody fought harder for civil rights, education and integration. The New York Times wrote that he was the man who single-handedly made the election of Barack Obama as president possible and that is certainly true.
I do think the author does not recognize Cosby's true genius and true and special goodness. In history, He will be, I am sure, regarded as the most important force for traditional American liberal ideals of fairplay and justice in the last half of the 20th century. That is one of the reason anti-liberals and neo-liberals have united over the last two years in a witch-hunt against him.

Regarding the claims that the Gender Feminist conspiracy against Dr. Cosby should have been given more space in the book, it should be remembered that at the time the book was written only five serious claims against Dr. Cosby had been made public. They had been made in early 2005 and nobody else through November 2014 publicly made any accusations against Dr. Cosby. The claims had been made by a 31 year old mentally disturbed ex-professional basketball player, living with her parents, who told a ridiculous story that made it clear that she was only seeking to extort money from Dr. Cosby. A second accuser was a lawyer who was facing disbarment and also had frequent run-ins with the law and mental illness. Two others were failed aging models who had recently been through tough divorces. The final accuser was a blackmailer who had stolen $100,000 or more from Cosby by pretending that her daughter was Cosby's child. Any serious investigator would see at once that all these accusations were silly and false.

The author had no way of knowing that Attorney Gloria Allred would go stark raving mad and start a Crusade against Cosby to try and extort $100 million dollars from him and get dozens of mentally ill, ex-drug addicts to read scripts that she prepared accusing him of all sorts of crazy crimes. One could not have predicted that the racist and sexist mass media would embrace her crusade and join in the lynching of Cosby.

I have used this book many times over the last year to understand Cosby and the Civil Rights movement in America. It is also important to understand how the Feminist movement, which Cosby totally supported, was taken over by a band of anti-gender women dedicated to turning America into a rape culture (rape being defined as any heterosexual sex not controlled by women) and destroying all men and the women who love them. The author and nobody else could have predicted that.

Cosby remains what he has been for 60 years, a great role model for all men and women of America and the world.

We Americans owe much to Bill Cosby. His compassion, talent and intelligence did more to ease racial tensions and create an environment in which all Americans can work together. I knew this before I read the book but of interest to me was to answer the question, how was it possible for Bill Cosby grow up in the streets of Philadelphia and eventually become the person he is? It is a remarkable and uncommon story. There was no reason to believe, in his early years, that he was destined for success. Bill Cosby had a number of "heroes" along the way--people who encouraged him, taught him what they knew and gave him a chance to prove himself--and Cosby took advantage. He has remained loyal to these people throughout his life. It is satisfying to learn that a celebrity as lovable as Bill Cosby is on stage, has also, for the most part, conducted his private life with the same down-to-earth dignity and joy. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and recommend it to anyone interested in the Bill Cosby story.

Whenever I read a biography I hope to glean information that I did not know. Having been a fan of Bill Cosby since his debut album was released in 1963 and an avid watcher of I Spy, I looked forward to reading this book.

I was not disappointed. Whitaker does an excellent job of capturing Cosby’s background, thoughts, and accomplishments. The behind the scenes stories of his life lend an even better understanding of the man’s humor. The accounts of the people in his life that helped him become the famous comedian we all know, are told with a narrative that keeps you reading and surprises you. An example is the recognition by Robert Culp as to just how talented Cosby was that led him to push for Cosby as his acting partner on I Spy.

One of the things I did not know is how much Cosby is responsible for the success of Ray Romano’s series Everybody Loves Raymond. Whitaker gives us insight as to the influence Cosby has had on not only the entertainment industry but also how much he has contributed to black colleges and people not in the spotlight.

As with any human there are flaws and weaknesses, of which Bill Cosby has his share. This biography does a good job of discussing these without getting into tabloid details.

Whether you are a fan or not, this book is well worth the read.

I've loved Dr. Bill's work since I was nine years old. I love his standup, I loved "The Cosby Show", I even liked some of the so-so movies he was in. Mr. Whitaker's book has some unforgivable typos, misspellings, and syntax problems. (Whitaker makes references to Cosby having imitated Jackie Robinson's walk. He used the word "gate", but should have written "gait". How that got by a competent editor is beyond me. I doubt Dr. Cosby who is a huge advocate of speaking proper English would have liked that.

But he "cooperated" with the book, so only a few of the seamier things about his life are in here. Autumn Jackson made it in, but anything pertaining to some longstanding allegations never did. It'd have been great if he even addressed them, and said they weren't true.

In Whitaker's defense, he claimed he only put in things he could prove. BUT, there were several instances in which Whitaker retold stories from a very one-sided point of view. You could practically hear Cosby dictating it. In more than a few instances in which there were differences of opinion, Whitaker only wrote Cosby's side, without showing much regard for the other point of view.

The book reveals a LOT of great stuff that shows how Cosby developed as an artist and as a man. I enjoyed a lot about this book, but it might as well have been an autobiography, or an "as told to".

A long, not particularly engaging read which didn't leave me feeling as though I knew Cosby much better than I did at the start. The sections on I Spy and The Cosby Show often read like episode guides rather than providing any real insight. Frankly, I suspect that the real story is in what isn't mentioned. Sometimes there are hints (Whitaker says that Cosby's mother didn't attend his wedding, but never explains why) and other times there are just glaring omissions: the allegations of sexual assault which have been simmering for some time now. Not a must read by any means.
