Highly recommended. A fun account of how the universe conspired to turn a physicist into an artist. It is well worth the 99 cents!

This short story reminded me of Kerouac's Desolation Angeles except the desolation does not seep through every page but it comes out from time to time in a funny way. Reviglio is a Columbia PhD, has a passion for snakes, and a totally Freudian interpretation of astrophysical instruments. He is now a painter, photographer and writer in an economically depressed Europe. After all, history tells us that during times of falling currency or at least during the application of a pungent austerity lotion on its face humanity forges some of its greatest artists. Actually that is probably wrong. The point of the story is that Reviglio leaves science for art, and it all has to do with snakes, beer, the desert, an Arizona wild man - keeper of a good looking but inadequate telescope. Science 0 Art 1. Actually science and art are very similar searchers for truth among data that are often confusing. Check out "The Cosmic Sucker".

This short autobiographic story tells the tale of the author's life changing decision to take up art instead of his field of study, astrophysics. It details his night in the desert with a huge telescope which defied his ability to bend it to his will.

It's amusing rather than outright funny and I found the writing style rather choppy. Sentences had an annoying tendency to end with a series of dots instead of a full stop... I can take that occasionally but it happened several times on some pages. In fact one sentence just stopped before it had finished. However, it's an interesting idea that the universe can gang up on you to make you take the right choices for you. Ok but not my favourite book.

Delightfully entertaining short story with a message we could all use.  Does the cosmos really deliver to us the truths we seek aware or not?
