Top customer reviews
Shipping is well done - a very sturdy box for the product, with a stand itself folded up inside a little carrying bag with a string pull close on it. So the item itself is pretty assuredly going to arrived unharmed. It also ships with a little velcro strap, which isn't mentioned on the packaging or directions anywhere, so I assume it's for cable management if needed.
Unit's main hinge is pretty steady - it locks into place at the various angles, and holds well. The button to unlock it is easy to depress, and the movement doesn't feel loose at all.
And that's where it starts to go downhill. The smaller legs really aren't steady at all. They pivot open fine, and extend for my laptop, but the "feet" that rotate up are not at all solid, and the arms themselves end up twisting around their axis with little pressure. But it's those little peg feet that come up to hold the laptop from sliding off the edges that really have the most movement in them, making the laptop feel not at all secure.
They're less twisty if you don't extend the legs, and just have them at the fully closed position, but then the whole contraption isn't wide enough to provide any stability at all, and the laptop tips over if you so much as look cross-eyed at it.
Ipad usage it works well, because of the lack of weight (and the fact that for iPad use, the legs are NOT extended). And the ability to change the angle gives it some value despite the wobble of the legs.
If you want something to use and hammer on for a laptop, this isn't the answer. Look at the Logitech or some of the other units that are completely stable, just like being on a flat surface. But if you're like me and it's mostly there just to have it visible with minimal typing, then this will probably suffice, but be aware that you won't have the most stable platform available.
1) The front legs aren't really adjustable: they are either all the way in, or all the way out.
2) Given the lack of control over how long the front legs are set, and that the rear leg is fixed, you're kind of limited of how you can set up your computer without taking a lot of space.
In other words, this limitations force the legs to take a wider space on my desk that what the computer itself does. My desk doesn't go all the way to the wall, so the rear leg is somewhat inside the gap between the wall and the desk. But other than that, the product does what it says, and yes, it feels very solid. I am not afraid of this thing breaking any time soon.
1: very portable -- would fit in laptop case or otherwise easily carried
2: very sturdy -- should be able to hold a standard laptop without trouble at any angle
3: small footprint -- should not create more clutter
3: adjustable -- nice to be able to adjust to a variety of tilt angles, but should be able to hold laptop nearly vertical
4: multi-purpose -- nice to be able to double as a stand for e-reader (or actual book), &c
My main need/desire is to hold my ThinkPad T430s at a nearly vertical angle (open) to use an external (wired) keyboard and thus have a more properly ergonomic setup with the screen at eye height and a not-a-laptop-keyboard under my fingers. I also have several other laptops, from a monster Sony Vaio to various stages of Apple development so I'd like to be able to use a stand with these (particularly that Apples with their much nicer built-in keyboards) but at a much lower angle. I also read a lot when I'm not typing, so being able to set a book or e-reader on the stand would be a nice perk.
This stand fills all those criteria beyond what I had hoped to find, especially for the price! Granted, you can get much more expensive stands that are much sturdier but also not nearly as portable, or as adjustable, or nearly as small of footprint. This stand seems to be very solidly built (it feels solid and locks tightly into place). The front leg extensions work perfectly to provide a large surface area for the laptop to sit on and are perfectly sized for book or e-reader when retracted. The rear leg can be set to any practical angle and locks into place nicely. The unit can be unpacked and set up in literally about 5 seconds, then packed back up just as quickly. A nice extra touch is the included carry bag to keep the stand and anything adjacent to it in the laptop case from getting dinged.
Having read other reviews before purchase, I notice there are many people who agree that the stand is very solid but others say it is flimsy or doesn't work as expected. To the latter, I have to wonder if the quality control isn't what it should be, but for my own stand I'm very happy to say I seem to have got one of the good ones.
I use this with my Toshiba Satellite e45t-a4200 and it does just fine. My Toshiba is 14" and weighs in at around 4.5 lbs. Would I use it with a larger laptop? No. But you may want to give it a try for yourself.
Would definitely recommend to someone looking for an inexpensive, portable laptop stand.
