Book 1 of 4 in Darkened Nights: History (4 Book Series). A quick read telling the Cinderella's parents story.
**"This story is a precursor to Once Upon a Darkened Night Book I: Of Cinder and Madness."**
The love story of Eleanor's parents, from the prequel of "Cinders and Madness".
A baron, Jacques, grieving for the lost of his father. A basket weaver's daughter, Gabrielle, grieving for the recent lost of her mother.
I enjoyed this story, the characters are enchanting and plot enticing. Well written and fast paced. I enjoyed reading how this series evolved. A true love story with tragic family secrets revealed. Dark yet magical story that is the stuff fairy tales are made of. While a quick read, Ms. Zoltack manages to bring this story together and bring her characters to life through the pages of "The Cost of Love". Strongly recommended. Fairy tale lovers, a must read, especially, if you ever wondered about Eleanor's parents. Short but an excellent read.

From joy they found in the union and family, and from sorrow washing me over thinking about what comes next.
Jacques is freshly promoted to carry the Baron title after his fathers unfortunate death. Worn out by grief, he almost refuses to attend a ball held by the royals, but in the end he is glad his mother persuaded him otherwise. Meeting Gabrielle, a beautiful and outstanding commoner, definitely changes his life, and Jacques is determined to prove his feelings to the sweet girl. Only, the obstacle of social impairment hangs above their heads, creating a wall between the two hearts.
This is exactly the amount of emotions I needed now. Characters you are bound to love, a story full of hope, grief, and love, gentleness that will caress your soul if you open up to the tale. Magical yet mundane, with little Cinderella-tale elements, I will definitely have sweet dreams today.
I read a review copy and voluntarily wrote here my opinion, because I think that every soul with a sense of romance should pick the story up.
From the stories of Cinderella growing up, I have always know that her parents past away. The mother first due to an illness, then after remarrying the father passes while away on a trip. This however does not contain the death of the two parents. We get somewhat of a happy ending. For now.
I liked this story more than I did Of Cinder and Madness. It felt nice to get the love story that started it all.
Jacques father had just past away making him baron. Jacques mother makes him go to the ball the king is throwing for his wedding to his first wife. As Jacques has paid his dues to the king he goes to leave but spots a girl who is not of nobility. Gabrielle, daughter to the basket weaver, slipped into the ball. As she is about to leave she is stopped by a nobleman.
For those who love Cinderella, I recommend this short story. It is a cute way to see the start of one of the most famous fairy tales.
You'll truly enjoy Nicole's alternate version of Cinderella in Cinder of Madness. It's dark, yet magical in the world she created. The Cost of Love brings you to the beginning of Eleanor's story.
Another 5 stars!
