Tips for Personalizing Spaces

Little things make a big difference in any room. Personalize your spaces with displays that show your personality and interests.

  1. Book It: Grab a few of your favorite books and stack them on a table. Top with a small bouquet of fresh flowers.
  2. Cute Cluster: Use some old glass bottles to create a centerpiece highlighting garden clippings-it's more interesting than a standard vase.
  3. Collective Display: Show off hat collections by hanging them on the walls instead of art.
  4. Serving a Purpose: Use a serving tray or bowl to display accessories such as seashells, rocks, jewelry, and more.
  5. Memories in a Bottle: Fill old apothecary bottles or jars with sand from vacations and group these together on a mantel or shelf.

Many cottage-style decorating books include photos of cozy, inviting rooms that I'd love to just dive right into. I was hoping to find photos like that in this book, too. Unfortunately, to me this book doesn't feel very cottage-like at all. I've been searching through a lot of cottage style books lately and dislike the trend toward the white all-over room, thoroughly depicted in this book. Most of the photos in this book are of sterile, white rooms (white walls, white floors, white furniture) with a few splashes of color (aqua and orange appear the most frequently). The rooms look rather antiseptic, kind of like a decorated laboratory. The cover photo is a great example of the photos to be found in this book. If you like the cover photo, you'll like this book. For myself, I much prefer the cottage styles created by Kaari Meng (French-inspired Home/French General), Marian Parsons (Inspired You/Miss Mustard Seed--she does use a fair amount of white and cream in her decorating but not so overwhelmingly that it feels antiseptic), and the cottage style shown in Sunset's Cottage Style Decorating book from 2003 (an oldie, but goodie--cottage style is partially about decorating with antiques anyway, so surely a 10 year-old book can give us some great ideas). I'd rather go back to the old cottage style--whether it be French, English, or American.

I have to say I'm very pleasantly surprised by the New Cottage Style book. It's not new pictures of the expected beach and country cottage; it's filled from front to back with delicious images of different interpretations of cottage style. I'm happy to see everything from modern to French, from whitewashed to moody, colorful to neutral, and casual to somewhat formal. The entire book is summery and light-filled, perfect for sitting on the porch with a glass of lemonade and perusing for ideas to steal. I've already looked through it at least 10 times, but I see something new each time. It's definitely a great book to have in the library to refer to again and again.

If you love Cottage Style and can't get enough of it, you should enjoy seeing the cottages, bungalows and farmhouses in this charming book. Its focus is the NEW cottage style--there's even a modular home decorated in a relaxed cottage style. (Top designer David Easton who worked at Parish-Hadley and taught design history at Parsons School of Design in New York writes in his book Timeless Elegance: The Houses of David Easton that he is building a pre-fab home in the country with his partner--so it demonstrates these modular, prefab homes can have style and panache.)

I don't know about you, but I have never met a cottage or cabin I couldn't love and wouldn't want to decorate. They are timeless homes which evoke a bit of romance, nostalgia for the past and a "vacation-state-of-mind" as this book describes.

But how to decorate cottage style today without being too cliched or cloying? This book answers that question by featuring many examples of updated cottage. The homes offer a hybrid look that is more streamlined with some modern elements and diverse color choices. While you will see the always lovable cottage elements such as sea grass carpet, relaxed slipcovers, old fans, antique glass bottles and decanters, these are combined and punched up with graphic pillows and carpet, modern art, modern silhouette glass lamps, melamine dining chairs etc.

Divided into house tour sections, you visually tour homes in this book that are grouped by four cottage styles: every day living, classic looks, touch of elegance and welcoming retreats. There are four to six homes in each section exemplifying these different looks.

I buy many Cottage books, this is a new favorite! I love the House tours which include an exterior shot of each home, which, many times, books or magazines do not show. The photos were varied and informative. A fun cottage escape!

Until very recently, you couldn't peruse this book on Amazon. Therefore, I waited 3 months for the library to bring it in. I have bought books sight-unseen in the past that turned out to be duds. This one is defnitely a keeper, and I'm going to buy it.

This is not the cottage style that features dark panelled walls and cluttered interiors with duck decoys everywhere - the kind of gloomy cabin that your grandparents might have enjoyed. This is clean, crisp, and more along the lines of Pottery Barn. What I appreciate most, is that the editors did not fill the last 50 pages with photos of gardens or muffin recipes. I find that endlessly annoying. Instead, the interior shots go right until the very last page.

The homes and rooms featured are so inspiring and lovely to look at. I think this is the best cottage book I've ever come across. And the pages are not glossy which I also appreciate - there is no glare at all. So, if your heart beats a little faster when you see a gorgeous cottagey interior, you should buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

Waited eagerly for publication of this book and have enjoyed reading it. But found a few rooms I have seen in earlier books and magazines. Would like to have all original and fresh pictures instead of recycled things from the recent past.
