About the Author

Mary Mashuta became a quilter in the 1970s, when hand quilting was a common practice. She switched to machine quilting with a walking foot in the 1990s so that she would have a chance of finishing the quilts she enjoyed making. In the mid-1980s, she left careers in teaching and interior design to become a full-time international quilting teacher. Her classes have always included color and design work, but she has also emphasized what to do when the top is done. Because she never made the move to free-motion quilting, she has been able to help other quilters who are "drop the feed dog" challenged. Now her students and readers know that they can finish their quilts without having to send them out. As a professionally trained teacher, she has also encouraged quilters to realize that they can create their own designs, from simple to complex. This is an area where many would-be machine quilters need encouragement, as well as specific information about needles, threads, and batting. In addition to her books, Mary has written numerous magazine articles. Her work has appeared in national shows including Quilt National and Visions. She had the fun of designing eleven quilts for the yearly book that Kaffe Fassett creates for Rowan Fabrics. Mary is an ambassador for BERNINA of America. She lives in Berkeley, California, with her twin sister and fellow quilter, Roberta Horton. Together they were named the 2014 TQS Legends by The Quilt Show (thequiltshow.com).

I really love this book. I keep going back to it again and again, just to enjoy the colorful quilts! There is much to inspire here, and don't think that it is geared only towards the 30's reproduction fabrics. You can use the quilts featured in this book as inspiration for using any fabrics you may have in your stash. And Mary's no-fuss approach to machine quilting will help you finish all those un-quilted tops you may have. A must-have for any passionate quilter!

I have really enjoyed reading this book. I found it very informative and enjoyable and plan to use several of the patterns. I have purchased an additional copy to be part of a table decoration that I am making for the annual fall meeting of the Utah Quilt Guild. I've purchased about 15 books in the last 6 months and have enjoyed this one the most. I think it will sell very well. Our Guild has over 1000 members, and hopefully the book will get exposure at the meeting from vendors that are there. One problem I had was that I would have liked to have the Indian hatchet pattern printed in the book and it was not. If anyone knows where I could get a copy of it I would appreciate them letting me know.

This is a great book - full of information and pictures for inspiration as well as patterns to make some beautiful quilts.

There is a detailed section on machine quilting which, as a beginner, I found extremely helpful.

I saw this book at my mum's quilting club whilst visiting and as soon as I got home I had to get my own copy.

2010 is my year to make at least two quilts from this book.

Thanks Mary Mashuta - I've got your other books on my wish list as well !

Wonder book on using vintage fabrics. Love all of Mary Mashuta's books. She is a great teacher and her instructions are precise. Love the history behind the feedsack fabric. Although really hard to find anymore.
